Really excellent
It’s good as a language app in and of itself, I haven’t tried any other apps for Te Reo Māori but the interface is better than Duolingo. Despite not having all the stars and trophies that supposedly “gamify” learning, I found this app plenty addicting.
The only wish I could have is that the letters on the keyboard were a bit bigger! There’s room on the keys for them to be. Please have aroha on my old eyes!
meh
a very limited app, focusing on vocabulary largely without context - not a particularly good way to learn a language, and decidedly inferior to both duolingo (which was supposed to have added māori by now but hasn’t) and the pimsleur method (which i used for conversational russian to great success).
for better instruction at your own pace, check out the tōku reo website.
Great Resource
I would give this app 5 stars, because it is the best Te Rep resource I have found, but the keyboard drives me absolutely insane. The keyboard functionality has me missing button clicks, particularly the spacebar. Luckily this app redeems itself with great grammar lessons.
Best app to learn Te Reo Maori at the moment.
You’ll soon forgive the kind of glitchy interface as this app teaches you more in one day than any other Maori app in weeks. Some software optimization would be appreciated, but nevertheless, great job, and please keep up the good work, thanks for making this app available.
Suggestion to the creators of the app:
I’m not sure why I know ‘E kimihia ana ngā hōiho - the horses are being sought’ while I don’t know: ‘Thanks’ or ‘How are you?’ or ‘Can I have a glass of water?’
‘Me noho ngā tūru’ - (The chairs should be sat upon) seems like something I should be learning when I already know how to say “Good morning”, “pass me the salt, please”, or “Take care”, or well, anything, that should come up in a normal conversation. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Excellent resource!
I love this app! Thank you to the creators; I’m trying to learn Te Reo from the U.S. and there are not that many resources available.
When I first started using Tipu I sometimes thought it was glitching as it seemed to repeat things a lot, but I soon realized that it’s just drilling the lessons, and it does this just the right amount to get them to really sink in. I’ve just completed all available lessons and I feel like I truly understand everything they’ve taught me. It moves at a really good speed, delivering enough new information to keep it interesting, without ever feeling overwhelming. My only complaint is that it doesn’t keep going forever! 😉 But, I will keep my eyes out for updates and look forward to new lessons soon.
Thanks!
Being of maori descent and living in America, I don't often get a chance to connect with my roots. This is a way I can integrate te reo maori into my everyday life. Thanks for that.
