As a multi instrumentalist who started out on drums, I have a relatively basic grasp of written music theory and using this app as a tool has been great for my creative process. I’ve got all the sounds/ sequences I want floating round in my head and can find them by ear but it usually takes a while to get them written down. This app has helped speed up that process significantly, allowing me more time to put together music without worrying half as much about the theory side of things. Awesome tool to have at my disposal, thank you!

This is a really awesome app for writing songs and practicing scales and chord progressions. I would be forever grateful if you could add other alternative tunings though- please please add open C (CGCEFC) and CGCFGC. Thank you!

I learned various instruments over the years but was looking for something to expand my knowledge of theory yet be practical for writing songs. This app is superb for that. It’s very user friendly and I think it is incredible value for money with the amount of things you can do with it. The video explainers that Chris does are simple, clear and he has a nice style of communication. I rarely write reviews - possibly the best app for anything I’ve ever spent money on

Love this app it's helping me learn Piano and Ukulele. However this app would become even more useful if it could use midi input for piano or be able to be loaded as a Auv3 plug so you could see the accuracy of chord being played. At the moment I run Aum with Pure Piano in the background which works very well.

Useless without that feature

Hello! I’ve already written a review on this and overall think this is a great app. However, it does need more chords. For example, I wish to create E Minor add 9 and can’t do so. Only E Major add 9. Needs more sus chord's too! Please try add some more chords or give an option to create chords by selecting notes Thanks

TONALY is a songwriting app that allows users to write chord progressions for their own songs. Users are free to write songs in any key they want and at any tempo they want. For example, you might want to write a gentle love ballad in G Major at 66 BPM (adagio) or a somewhat dark cautionary song in A Minor at 98 BPM (andante). TONALY utilises the circle of fifths and automatically provides the seven chords, from lowest to highest, in the scale of your choice. Therefore, even if you decide to change the key for your song, the numbered chord progressions will remain the same. For example, if you write a chord progression in minor like I, III, IV, vi and change the key from A Minor to E Minor, the chord progression will stay the same, just without different notes. TONALY allows you to use any chords you like for your songs, even if they may be considered off-key: major, minor, augmented, diminished, dominant, you name it. Personally, I find this app very useful to experiment with different chord progressions and write my songs within minutes. In fact, it only took me two days to write ten songs for my upcoming album in the works! It’s easy to use, flexible to work with and can even teach you new chords and scales to play with any instruments. However, this app is not perfect. For each song you write using this app, there’s a limit to how many bars you can include. Plus, this app only allows you to write up to two chords per bar. This, if you want up to four chords, you would have to double your song’s tempo which means using up more of its length space. Finally, this app initially allows you to learn and use up to nine basic scales. If you want to use a few more dozens scales, you’ll have to buy the scales add-on for a small price. It’s not too expensive, but it’s a shame that not all scales are included straight away. All in all, TONALY is an ideal songwriting app for any musician, songwriter and production although it’s not perfectly functional.

The interface for this app is flawless. Really easy to use and very dynamic. This is what every musician needs. I would love to see chord and scale diagrams implemented for guitar as well as piano.

It would be nice to be able to split a bar into 4 beats instead of two so as to create a little bit more rythme

So I am in songwriting mode… I choose the chords I want, but no way will it let me use the chords I actually want in my song!!! Basically, the chord substitution feature absolutely does not work. You tell this useless app the chord you want to substitute, and it puts back in the same wrong chord it had previously selected. By way of example, take a simple, well-known E Dorian tune… like Riders on the Storm by the Doors as an example - it is completely IMPOSSIBLE to enter the correct chords!!! so unless you only want to “compose” utterly bland songs to a formula, this app is completely useless. Why even offer the suggestion that chords can be substituted in song, when clearly they cannot be? Yet another useless app that promises way more than it delivers… but at least it has shown me that in terms of composing, I have still found nothing to beat Abletom Live, whether you are just playing with ideas or have actually got a bit of structure in mind to begin with.
