Rotorua’s trails are truely amazing, built with flow and style to bring a grin to every face. The dirt here includes some volcanic pumice which means even when it’s raining, the trails stay mostly dry. This is the place dreams are made of. The Whakarewarewa trail network is what Maori call ‘taonga’ or treasure. As BIKE magazine’s Mike Ferrintino wrote, “This haven of geysers and mudpools is, and always has been, New Zealand’s meeting point between tourism and Maori culture. Not that we had the chance to notice, sucked immediately as we were into the ferny lush of the local forest, onto trails built by mountain bikers with mountain bikers in mind. Trails in verdant shade that dip weave and roll. Trails that snake through the trees in a way that makes hard riders hoot with joy yet at the same time could coax a huge grin to the face of a 70-year-old granma on her first bike ride ever. Candy Land. A lucky utopia. Sure gawk at the geysers, wrinkle your nose at the sulphury mud holes, soak in the hot springs, buy greenstone trinkets, but get down on your knees and kiss the mulchy earth of these trails because they are the true hidden treasure here”.

TrailMapps Reviews

Always outdated

App works great but these people updating new trails is really bad

Good - just needs more frequent map updates

Tunnuz on

New Zealand

The app is fine, however can only be useful if the trails are accurate. Unfortunately trail (and event) updates are not frequent enough, especially given the number of new trails that are built, and others that have been logged. Would be such a better app if updates were ever 2-3 months.

Warning: Incorrect tracks included

iPaddling on

New Zealand

The tracks across Tarawera Rd in the Okareka reserve (outside the Whakarewarewa Forest) are not formed tracks or are walking only. Riding bikes will damage these routes and bikes are not permitted. Please don’t be mislead by this app.

Great app.

Has been a really handy tool when navigating the redwoods mtb park. Wouldn’t be without it. Never had any issues with it crashing, seems to work well in all the areas I bike. Would be cool if it had suggested route options put together by local riders maybe, who know the forest and tracks well. Route options could have different skill levels, riding duration and even starting points now that there are multiple carparks to start from. One of the hardest parts for a non local is trying to put together a good days riding and getting the best tracks included.

Crash

App just crashes after opening?

Great App! However

It worked great until recently as the map for my local trails has been crashing when trying to open. Must just need an update.

Not up to date

MTB Tony on

New Zealand

This is an expensive app by App Store standards but I thought it would be worth it to have up to date information on the Rotorua trail network. Imagine my disappointment when I hopped on the shuttle and was told that Billy T was closed for logging. This is a must ride trail and the app made no mention of this. If you're going to charge this much then make sure you keep it up to date. Save your money and check Trailforks instead.

Love it!

Awesome app! Saved me getting lost! Loved the details about the track and the upcoming races! Keep up the good work. Only recommendation is to see the track levels on the map 👌😊

Needs reception to work

Liz_qwertyasdfg on

Great in the hotel room where you have wifi, slow to load on the main trails (mad if you don't), USELESS in the forest where there is no or limited reception (blue lake). Recommend a paper map over this.
