Description

uFocus is a distraction-free writing environment that supports plain text files and allows you to keep them organized inside libraries. It allows everyone to express their creativity in the most simple way.
• Unobtrusive interface: the navigation bar disappears while writing.
• Swipe to show the sidebar. Here you can link your favorite libraries and quickly access your documents.
• Show text statistics including character and word count and reading time.
• MultiMarkdown: easily add headings, quotes, ordered and unordered lists, links, images, italics, bold, footnotes, citations, glossaries and acronyms. You can then export your documents to HTML.
• Highlighting: you can stay even more focused by fading out all the text but the current sentence or paragraph.
• Typewriter scrolling: automatically scrolls the text when you get on a new line.
• Sound mode: experience the ultimate feeling of a typewriter.
• No deletions mode: disable deletions and replacements if your greatest temptation is always to edit your text instead of writing.
• Fullscreen: focus on your words and hide everything else.
• Choose between three different editor widths, four font sizes and a light, dark, sepia or amber theme, or create your own theme.
• Print single files or entire directory hierarchies.

This developer deserves a coffee! Nicely done and still works well in 2024. I love the Amber theme (retro style) typewriter sound. Love being able to save files locallly. THANK YOU!

Best minimalist writing app

United States

I wish this app were cross-platform.. it's simply the best because it does what it is supposed to do and nothing else. No spellcheck, no ugly interface, just plain jane, get to work.

For every student, this is such an amazing tool.

Just the best for focusing on writing.

Too many quirks

accentphotography on

Simple things like deciding to add a work in a sentence means hoping the blue cursor line will be close to the area and your not having to back it up line by line like 20 lines and then moving it to the left to the area to insert the word. Time killer. Not being able to easily copy and paste. Paragraph or line copying often copys partials and when you delete it gets even stranger. Other things as well ... I can't wait to finish my work so I can delete it. Glad it was free but not worth any small app fee like this.

An elegantly simple markdown editor

chchen2021 on

I was fortunate to start using markdown with two of the best editors, uFocus and Typora. I use uFocus for text documents that need minimal formatting, and Typora for more complex documents with equations, tables etc. After using markdown for more than a year and testing about a dozen editors, I still use these two editors the most. The default setting in uFocus with medium editor size is very well thought out, so much so that I constantly refer to uFocus for formatting ideas when customizing other markdown editors. The developer is among the most responsive and helpful developers I have ever encountered, especially considering that uFocus is a free app. He implements suggested functions with frequent updates and responds to questions during Christmas break! Tip: you can open a folder and then link it as a library for future access. Read "uFocus Introduction" under the help menu for this and other hidden functions.

Handy...and straightfoward

I like using UFocus to take notes while on Zoom. I float the Zoom window, and set the UFocus "writing surface" off to the side, and we're off to the races. Good app. (Also, like that I can choose to have typing sounds because, well, that's just fun.)

Focus. As the name so the writing

It does what it's supposed to do: typing, creating your copy without distractions. Focus has simple interface, easy-to-study functions and text formatting, and different color modes. In addition, the app is useful to open some *.txt files.

Simply the best, and free

This is an excellent straighforward app for when you need to just get some writing done, without distraction. I use it everyday now. This software should come pre-installed on every new Mac. It is that good, and fulfills an essential function. The app is also very well designed and well thought out. It strikes a balance between too little and too much. ... I also like the basic customizable theme ability - I have set the background to a dlightly dark cobalt blue and use the Nouveau IBM font set to white color, for a nice late 80s/early 90s terminal/DOS Word Perfect look. ... Anyway, this is a great app. Really useful, and great if you need to focus and get writing done/take notes/etc.
