Description

Welcome to Uist Unearthed ( Ulaidhean Uibhist ), the home of virtual archaeological exploration in the Outer Hebrides. Discover the archaeology of Uist like never before, using exciting Augmented Reality technology and a GPS enabled map to track your location along the Hebridean Way. Capture and share moments with family and friends as you explore and interact with Uist’s incredible archaeological sites.
Available from Summer 2021, the first site that has been interpreted is the fascinating Bronze Age settlement of Cladh Hallan, South Uist - where some of the earliest known mummified bodies in Europe were discovered. Augmented Reality lets you see the original settlement, as it would have been 3000 years ago, in the modern day landscape. Enjoy, for the first time, detailed 3D reconstructions which have never before been produced of this internationally significant site.
A further six incredible archaeological sites will be added over the coming months, so be sure to keep the app so you can enjoy these exciting updates! You’ll also be able to browse other archaeological resources and discover more of what Uist has to offer. Share your stories and experiences via social media remembering to use the hashtag #UistUnearthed - we’d love to see your photos and discoveries.

UIST Unearthed Reviews

Excellent App

The app is excellent. It really helps bring to life the remains of the ancient sites. Top tip for other users….. We did have problems getting one of the sites to scan because cattle had been scratching themselves against the post and hair from their coat was wound round the nails holding the QR code in place. This stopped the scanner working. It took us a while to realise what the problem was but once we pulled the hair away the scan worked immediately.

One of a kind

Highly recommend this app for anyone visiting Uist, slick and user friendly design, full of really useful local tips (not just for archeology). This is a meticulously researched app and suitable for all ages, it’s easy to use and there is no other app like this in the Hebrides, a powerful augmented reality experience- you’re missing out if you don’t have it!
