Like the title says, the price is too high for what it lacks. For example, image support. It’s online docs say that you can adjust the preview size (true), but that the image displays full size in the pop up window. Not true, they display as smaller as the preview, what’s the point of that? Their online support also has a fix for showing todo checkboxes but that doesn’t work either. That’s two big things I need, and the support articles are just wrong about it. And finally, the student payment options. Apparently you’re only a student if you have a student ID. Nope, in Finland you only get an ID if you pay extra to join the student unions. The student unions do nothing but organize parties, so no thanks, it’d cost more than the full subscription license. Other software companies (for example, Tidal) have better systems for checking if you’re a student, it’s definitely possible. But the todo list checkboxes have been asked for for years, and the devs don’t care, and they don’t care to have accurate support docs, and they don’t have very good image support, and no Apple Watch support, so it’s a lot of money for less than what Bear offers.
This is the only editor that has destroyed a text totally without anykind possible to restore. The last time was on export where typo when trying copy whole text (Ulysses doesn’t give any smart way copy exported text when offered options aren’t enough, like to anither WordPress) wrote over everything — again, on preview window, not on editor. Thanks. 14 hours job lost. Not any more.
Three years ago, I evaluated all these so-called ”writing apps”. Ulysses was the best and still is. Only minor drawback is the lack of tables, but if you need only text and pics, this is the best one.
This app is way too expensive. Competitive apps offer way more features and actually have some merit for offering subscription based purchase. Current Ulysses app on the other hand is essentially the same app which I have already purchased and paid for but now they want me to subscribe and pay a running fee. No thanks!
I've been using this app for my writing for some time now. This works perfectly, really fast and reliable sync via iCloud between iPhone and iPad. It's also really easy to do backups to iCloud's Files or to Dropbox. Organizing and structural editing is also really fast. This uses Markdown but it's still really easy and convenient to use. Cmd+I gives you Italics etc. and by changing Themes, you can hide asterisks and other code markings in a way it looks like a normal Rich Text (Italics, Bold, Undelining shows normally). Formatting is also super easy, no problematic formatting like in Word or other word processors. Everything happens so smoothly, flawlessly. Project folders and sheets in them are so nice to work with. If you are writing a novel, short story, essay, academic paper or a blog, this app is the number one. Scrivener is also nice, but Ulysses is more modern and minimalistic and still having all the necessary tools for professional writer. You can write in a bus or in a toilet and continue with your iPad or Macbook automatically. And all this with one yearly pay or via monthly 4.99€ subscription. I love Ulysses!
I BOUGHT the app couple of years ago with 40€ or so thinking I could use it as it was mine. Now it has turned into a subscription based program, and I have lost my right to write and edit my work. This is unacceptable. The app is great though. It’s a rip-off, but great.
Yes, it’s true.
I have used Ulysses for a long time. It was considerably more expensive than other similar markdown-editors when I bought it and now the developers are going to end my support unless I pay them EVERY MONTH for updates. This is not acceptable. I understand that they will need money to sustain new updates, but I am not willing to pay for an application every month to only get an update now and then because macOS has been updated as well. A much better alternative would have been a paid upgrade with some essential new features. I am going to transfer my writing work to Scrivener and markdown editing to Byword. This is not an easy decision for me.
I paid a lot of money for the full premium app and the then the developer decided to rip me off by going subscription based. Wouldn’t we trust them again.
