Brilliant writing app

I was apprehensive about Ulysses, having been a long-time believer in other writing apps like Scrivener and not going for the subscription model, which I never liked. I’m so sad I waited so long to get this app. It is powerful, sleek, easy to use, and just a little bit beautiful… and for a very reasonable price. What I love most is its synchronisation across all iOS platforms, and seamless ability to jump from iPhone to iPad to Mac without issue and continue writing. I am currently writing my second book on this app… and I will never look back.

Would get 5 stars if formatting options were more flexible

Feature Parity

Whilst I can’t complain about how sleek Ulysses looks, it doesn’t have feature parity with the macOS version. A quick search on the net revealed that my particular issue went back to at least 2021. So it looks like something the developers can’t be bothered to address, despite collecting a subscription fee every year.

Not really worth the money

Update: I was a bit harsh in the review below. Having shopped around, there’s web based apps charging far more than Ulysses for a bloated and badly designed experience. Ulysses is a race car by comparison. And I prefer using a native app over a web app. So whilst a lot doesn’t change, I guess it’s because the app is so sleek to start with. And I appreciate that they don’t overload the app with feature bloat. I’m increasing my score by two stars. Ignore the review below!! (I still prefer to use ProWritingAid over the grammar checker in Ulysses though) ——— The app looks nice and I return to it occasionally to see if there’s anything new. But it hasn’t really advanced much over the years. Certainly not enough to justify the cost. At the end of the day, how much can a markdown editor change? Answer: not much. It’s not a complicated app like photoshop. Most of what you can do in Ulysses can be achieved with open source apps and one time purchases of lifetime subs to grammar checkers. My advice? Don’t waste your money.

Sync issues

Forever syncing and downloading. Something definitely not right with iCloud linkages. Have reverted to Scrivener until they fix this.

Every single time I open the app, all my work needs to be synced up which takes a lot of time. This issue started later on and has really become a drag on what was a very good writing app. Considering switching.

Solid App

This is the writers notes app. Many features help with the writing and drafting process and app of choice for those who are serious about their writing and blogging.

Very flawed

I tried the trial, but after to-and-fro emails with Ulysses support soon realised this has one huge flaw. In its wisdom, Ulysses has decided to abolish the indent new paragraph on its basic editor. If you try this you end up with massively indented paragraphs for the rest of your text, rather than flush left paragraphs like every word processor I have ever used. Return key and tab to indent new pars have been the conventional for decades, if not centuries. Take a bow, Ulysses, for taking writers in a new direction. It’s an app for people who write web content - paragraphs spaced by a blank white line. Which is fine. But as someone who has produced nine books, contributed to two more, and had a million or more words published in newspapers and magazines, this app is deeply flawed. I regret spending so much time finding that out. If you are writing a blog or other internet-destined words this could well be the app for you. But if you write for print, I respectively suggest you may be wasting your time.

I wrote my first book in this app. I’m now writing my second. Nothing else comes close

They listen!

After using an apparently endless series of writing tools, I came back to Ulysses both because it's great but also because the subscription model gives me hope that it might not end up orphaned the way so many do. And it's great: I do worry about bloat creeping in and detracting from actually using it to create text, but so far it has avoided that. And it now has LaTeX (which really means KaTeX I think) maths, which I've wanted for years in a tool like this. It's never going to replace LaTeX for writing really maths-heavy text, but when you want a couple of equations it's just great. For what it does, it's the best I've found.
