Description

VelaClock is a world clock with unique features and an easily configurable user interface. VelaClock's feature set is ideal for photographers and outdoor enthusiasts. Users can quickly display the time of sunrise, sunset, dawn and dusk for three kinds of twilight (civil, nautical, astronomical), moon phase and tilt, and much more. VelaClock was the featured app at TUAW.com on 3/11/2011.
VelaClock is invaluable to users who travel or communicate with friends and colleagues around the world. VelaClock is an excellent tool for finding a good meeting time for cities in multiple time zones.
VelaClock can display the time and sun/moon information for:
- your current location (using the network or built-in GPS).
- cities around the world (over 500 cities currently available).
- user-defined locations by specifying latitude/longitude and time zone.
At a glance, VelaClock shows whether a city is currently in daylight, twilight or night. White text indicates daylight (sun is above horizon) and black text indicates night (sun is below horizon). A twilight indicator (a small colored rectangle) will appear to the right of the time when the city is in twilight.
The rows in the city list can optionally show a daylight bar that gives the user a picture of 24 hours of natural light (bright daylight, three kinds of twilight and night). The daylight bar (24 hours of light) may be centered at noon or current time. A thin white bar indicates when the moon is visible.
Tapping on a city row will transition to a new view with four horizontally scrolling pages of sun, moon and time zone information. A quick swipe of the finger will move between the four pages.
The date/time can be changed by tapping on the calendar icon in the toolbar. Incrementally move a day, an hour, a minute or a week in the future or the past. Arbitrarily jump to any date or time, years in the future or the past. Changing the date allows one to determine when a sunset or full moon will occur in the future or the past.
VelaClock does NOT require a network connection. Up to 50 cities may be added.

VelaClock Sun/Moon Reviews

The best sun-moon almanac

This wonderful app is a labor of love by the designers. The main panel (second from left) has a graphical display with a LOT of information, yet it’s easily understood. I would like to have an option to select time resolution (one-minute or one-second). Currently it’s fixed at one-minute resolution. I’d pay for that resolution option.

Inaccurate Equinox Time

X3phillips on

United States

I’ve used, and loved, this App for years. But today I discovered that it is reporting the wrong time for the Vernal Equinox. Today, 3/20/2023, Spring begins at 14:24 but the App says 14:14. That’s actually a pretty big discrepancy. It makes me question the validity of other data now.

Great app!

This app is great! I use it frequently when scheduling international calls and checking sunrise/sunset for future dates. The visualizations showing day/night, dusk/dawn are super helpful as is the ability to jump ahead or back by increments of minutes, day, week, month, year, or choose a date from calendar. It's also easy to add and arrange places. I used to use it on my Mac as well, but the latest available version hasn't worked on current macOS for awhile. I wish this was still being updated, but grateful it works on iOS for now. I'd gladly pay for updated version but understand it's difficult to get visibility to get enough paid users to make it worthwhile for the developer.

Love this App

As an outdoorsman I got to say this app is one of my favorites and gets used more during the fall and winter when I head to the woods. It is super helpful to know when the sun starts to light up the sky in the early morning so I can plan accordingly. No other app to my knowledge gives you the three twilights. I hope this app is around for many years to come. I would hate it if the developer stopped supporting it.

Oldie but a goodie

The app hasn’t been maintained since iOS 9 but miraculously it still works and is 64-bit. I’ve been using it since the iPhone 3GS days and there’s quite nothing like it as far as I can tell. The visualization of the day, dusk, twilight and nighttime is clear and I like the fact that I can jump to any date and any location I want. It was useful for planning my trip to Iceland in the winter a couple years ago.

Information dense

I love this app. I can see so much information all at once. I only wish it was updated to support new phone sizes. Still a 5 star app, though!

Very handy

Use it pretty much every day. I’m an addicted amateur astronomer, so the sun and moon times are invaluable, plus the app packs lots of useful information into the graphics. Fun interface.

If you travel you need this!

I've had the widget on my desktop forever and I finally sprung for the phone app. If you do any traveling or have relatives or business in other parts of your country or the world, do yourself a favor and pick this up!

Needs an update

I love this app a lot but it has lost a lot of accuracy for some reason and needs an update- when they do I would give it 5 stars.

Best App for Sunlight, Time, Moon

This app gives you clear and easy to use information about sunrise, sunset, and the various types of twilight, as well as moon phases. I’ve used this app for over six years and continue to find it useful.
