Since humans colonized the earth, they have settled down along rivers. People have used rivers as transport means or as energy providers but also as protection against enemies or as borders.
Boats were towed upstream by hand on towpaths until the industrial revolution happened in the 19th century.
The invention of the steam engine has been a milestone in the technical evolution but also brought the negative.
Rivers were further on polluted by the industry and heavy traffic on the water.
Citys along rivers have grown into metropolitan areas and economical centers.

Nowadays coal mines have been closed, the Heavy industry disappears and the environmental „thought“ becomes important.
Environmental friendliness such as alternative energy, E-Mobility, Co2 friendly is mankind’s challenge.
Today you can cycle on historic paths along rivers from city to city thru Europe, 45 metropolitan regions / 15 countries on about 120.0000 km predefined routes.
