From iPhone 7 and newer, the devices come with an IP67 rating, that makes them "splash" resistant.
For non IP67 devices, usage of waterproof case is recommended at water.
Location updates are optimized to minimize energy consumption. It is possible to run the app for up to 6 hours without charging. For longer trips I recommend the usage of a small power-bank.
This app includes advertising.
