Description

The ultimate edition of the story that inspired an internationally successful stage play and celebrated film by Steven Spielberg. War Horse, by children's author Michael Morpurgo, is now enriched for iPad by a musical performance, audiobook, interactive timeline and expert interviews.
THE STORY
At the beginning of the First World War, Albert sees his beloved horse, Joey, sold to the cavalry and shipped to France. Too young to join the Army, Albert nevertheless sets out to find his friend, who has been thrust into fighting on both sides of the frontline. Charging through gunfire and hauling ambulances through mud, Joey's loyalty and gentle spirit never waver. This is a story of bravery, kindness and friendship surviving in the toughest times.
AN AMAZING INTERACTIVE TIMELINE
Explore the real stories behind War Horse with a timeline set alongside the beautifully illustrated novel. The timeline presents the key events of the war, including America's decisive involvement in 1917, and brings you closer than ever to the life of a First World War soldier – through images, rotatable objects, video, letters, and dramatically narrated quotes and poems.
WATCH THE PERFORMANCE
Watch the author bring the characters to life in an 80-minute video performance of the story, accompanied by folk musicians. Join in the singing by following the synchronised script, or immerse yourself in the show with a full-screen view.
INVESTIGATE THE LIFE OF A SOLDIER
What was it like in the trenches? What did the soldiers wear? Why are tanks called tanks? The author and six experts are on hand to give video insights about life in the trenches, and the inspiration for the book. Many of the interviews and photographs were captured in the Devonshire village of Iddesleigh, where the novel begins and ends.

This is an amazing app, I am ten years old and dyslexic. It helps me to follow the text while listening to Michael Morpurgo, I wish there were more like this. Mum says it's a brilliant resource for learning, please do some more !!

I love this story... it's really touching. There's a cool timeline with amazing photos of soldiers, and a great live performance by Michael. (He does a great Welsh accent.)

Extraordinarily rich

This is an app in which to lose yourself - whether you are one of Morpurgo's millions of child fans or an adult with even the mildest curiosity about the First World War. There is an almost overwhelming amount of material to explore and the joy is in the detail - the photographs of Frank Hurley particularly struck me - but there are also newsreels, diary extracts, letters, official announcements, maps and telegrams all juxtaposed with interviews with experts and the author himself. This means that as well as getting a sense of the geo-politics of the war - and this goes way beyond the Western Front - you also get a very vivid sense of its impact on the lives of civilians and those serving in the military. And then there are the horses. A huge resource, a tribute to the archives which have fed it, and accessible and fascinating on so many different levels. Thoroughly recommended for all ages.

Excellent

This is what all book apps should have, as this app has set the bar high. You really have to try it, to realise just how much is packed in: You get the book, the audiobook, a historical timeline with pictures and documents from the time, video commentary from experts, plus a video of the author performing part of the novel to a live audience. Phew! A really polished product. The developers are to be commended for just how extensive and easily accessible this app is. Oh, and the story is superb!
