The hype exceeds the reality. This app cannot be relied upon to provide credible or accurate ocean current information in important areas of the Pacific Northwest. A quick check of ocean currents in the Puget Sound and Strait of Juan de Fuca area showed that the ocean currents depicted or forecast with the Saildrone app are flat out wrong. Do not rely on this app for preparation, trip planning or navigation. In one instance (at Deception Pass, near Seattle) the Saildrone app showed currents of 0.9 knots when in fact the actual currents were 6.2 knots. In other areas of Puget Sound and the SAN Juan Islands the app consistently shows zero current, when in fact what is occurring appears to “zero data available”. (Anyone sailing in the region knows currents are seldom zero and certainly are not zero there all the time.) The app’s ocean current display fails to make any clear distinction between a lack of available data and a lack of currents. This could mislead users into believing strong currents were not present, or forecast, when in fact currents are present, but the app simply has no data on them. This is a dangerous omission. This app has a novel appeal and lots of boaters (including myself) really want the marine data product it promises. Unfortunately this product doesn’t deliver on that promise. The data is sparse and the forecast models deliver dangerously misleading results. When I alerted their customer support to these concerns, here is part of the answer I received: ”...the existing Saildrone Forecast is not providing accurate current forecasts in complex regions such as Deception Pass due to the coarse resolution of the global current model which is presented in locations for which we do not have high resolution models.” Fortunately there are apps out there that do provide accurate current forecasts for up and down the west coast. (Navionics is one of them, best as I can tell.) I have unsubscribed and uninstalled Saildrone. I don’t want or need unreliable forecast info.
I love this app on my iPad but it will neither open nor behave on my iPhone. Curious. I’ve deleted and reinstalled twice, to no avail. No answer in the FAQ either. More curious. I’ll wait till it’s fixed, cause it’s a good app! Delivers concise and well presented weather info for just about anywhere. Keep improving this great product. PK
Good UX design, really intuitive, the animation for wind flow is amazing. So far the prediction is great, I will see if it will helpful this winter. I would like to know, if your prediction model only use data you collect from ocean or you have others sources and devices to produce forecast for all world locations. Thanks.
Really like the visuals of the app, especially the wind details. The morning weather notification is the best I have. All the data for the day in a easy to read format.
