“Staggeringly useful.” - Dan Etheridge, producer of Veronica Mars and Party Down
We’ve made the best screenplay reader even better.
Weekend Read 2 makes reading screenplays delightful by optimizing scripts for iPhone and iPad retina screens. Never squint and pinch to read a script again.
Whether reading from a PDF or a native file like Final Draft or Fountain, Weekend Read 2 gives you the tools to make every screenplay a smooth and easy read.
Created by screenwriter John August and the team behind the award-winning Highland, Weekend Read 2 has Hollywood talking.
“With Weekend Read, John August and his crafty elves have taken something that was the worst thing, namely reading scripts on a mobile device, and turned it into the best thing. I find it more pleasant to read a script in Weekend Read on my 4-inch iPhone screen than to read a PDF in proper screenplay format on my iPad. I even prefer it to reading full-sized paper scripts.”
- Rian Johnson, writer-director
(Knives Out, Poker Face, Star Wars: The Last Jedi)
“Weekend Read started as an app I didn’t know I needed and quickly became an app I can’t live without. Weekend Read keeps you on top of your reading pile, not buried under it. It’s seriously amazing.”
- Rawson Thurber, writer-director
(Red Notice, Dodgeball)
“This is the perfect solution I’ve been fantasizing about - it makes reading scripts (or anything) on the iPhone not just tolerable, not just painless, but actually a pleasure!”
- David Wain, writer/director/EP
(Wet Hot American Summer, Role Models)

I really love the idea for this app—especially because I use Highland on my Mac and love being able to see my files on my iPad. The interface is clean, and the library of scripts is a huge bonus
But, when I try to open the reader settings on my iPad, a small popover appears, and I can’t interact with it to change the size or font because it’s so small. I dabble in developing and know this could be easily fixed by switching this from a popover to a sheet. I hope the developers see this and make this incredibly easy fix that would make this a five-star app!
It still cuts off the tops and bottoms of many script pages
Back in the original version of this app I discovered that many of my scripts lost text that was in the first few or last few lines of each page. I reported this and they said they were working on a new version of the app so I'd have to wait for that. Now that new version is here - at a subscription price - and... The bug is still there! I've reported it again but no reply. I guess I won't be renewing my subscription. To bad cause it's a great way to read a script when it works. Another interesting way - the voice reader - hasn't worked for me even once. Same results on both my iphone and ipad. Yes I reported it but no solution has been forthcoming.
Please please please
Can we get the ability to use the voice aloud reader without the need to have the screen active? That’s a pretty standard feature for text to speech apps and would make this a killer function. It’s already great as is, but having to change my device settings to turn off display auto-lock every time I need to listen to a script is an obstacle. Thanks for considering.
Broken and had to get a refund…
I LOVED the first weekend read and stupidly deleted it from my iPhone when this came out. This new version just doesn’t work. I cannot open attachments into this app. I just doesn’t work. I emailed their customer support twice, asking for help…and zero response. Ultimately I had to get Apple to refund me.
Bring back the original please!
First app doesn’t work anymore, don’t trust them
Paid 10 bucks for a useless app and now they want me to pay monthly. No thanks. Better companies out there.
Want to love…. But…
There’s a great app somewhere close to here, but no full screen is a real step back. I was excited to try the voices, but it’s unusable as is. The phone comes loaded with voices - why not assign different ones to different characters? That’s when playback even works, which is patchy at best. Easy to accidentally select text, and unclear how to UN-select…
The more transparent the app, the better and more convenient it is. Unfortunately this update is a step back for Weekend Read.
I’ll have to cancel my free trial till the next update.
Nice upgrade but I hate that it’s a subscription
I am a longtime user of the older version of Weekend Read. I’m very disappointed that this app is now subscription-based. I also added one screenplay to the free version of this app and tried to add a second one and was told I’d reached my limit! If this app were a onetime payment, I’d gladly buy it but I will stick with the older version as long as it continues to work.

No full screen? No thanks.
I love the original Weekend Read. I have been using it since it first came out ... nine? years ago. I use it on my iPad and my iPhone. I recommended all my friends who want to read scripts. It's unfortunate that they want $15 a year to use this one. Even $15 seems a bit high, considering what you get. Give me a break. Most unfortunately, you can't read scripts full screen! The top bar and bottom bar do not disappear, ever. I'll use iOS' built in file reader. Sorry, dudes. You're not getting my $15 -- and I'm not using the free version -- if I can't read full screen.
Also, the text to speech is garbage. It uses the crummy built-in Siri voices. Let's try using some AI powered speech, since it's simple to implement.
Fix these things, and I'll consider it.

A fantastic update to a fantastic app. It’s shocking how indispensable it’s become.
