Description

Wind Power Calculator helps estimate the available power generated by a windmill based on several key factors. The formula for available power in the wind is expressed as:
Pa = 1/2 ξ ρ A v^3
Where:
P = power (W)
ρ = air density (kg/m^3)
ξ = windmill efficiency (typically below 0.4 or 40%)
A = cross-sectional area perpendicular to the wind (m^2)
v = wind velocity (m/s)
Keep in mind that air density decreases with temperature and altitude, but the most significant factor in power generation is wind velocity. A mere 20% increase in wind velocity can boost power generation by a remarkable 73%.
The energy produced by a windmill depends on the power generation, as outlined above, and the frequency of wind speeds at the specific location—referred to as the 'wind speed frequency distribution.' To calculate the total energy generated over a year, you need to sum the power generation for all wind velocities (from the windmill's cut-in speed to its shut-down speed) and multiply it by the hours the wind blows at those speeds.
