Love the autonomous cabs
I was able to ride a Baidu’s driverless taxi in Beijing using this APP for free. The 3km ride was mostly pleasant except that the car supervisor didn’t let me film inside. He claimed the cost of a vehicle was around 2M CNY and a single navigation module costed 700k CNY. I would say the computer did a better job than most human drivers. I did not feel any noticeable jolts during the trip and the computer detected the traffic signals, oncoming vehicles, and pedestrians much faster than I could do. I believe it is just a matter of time before driverless cars become the mainstream. At this moment the cars only operate in some less populated areas and can only carry passengers between selected points on the map. I wish they will be tested in more challenging areas like the ring roads at downtown. 9/10 overall. This free taxi service is highly recommended.
