Helping hungry kids in Africa or rescuing dogs from animal shelter is great. But when your neighbor in your town is hurting financially, let’s try to help them first to keep our communities and families strong. We all work hard but still, in 2023, 60% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck and over 40% of hard-working Americans do not have enough saving to cope with unexpected expenses, which pushes them off the financial disaster cliff. Joe, a single father of two children, blew his tires out on his Chevy truck recently. He doesn’t have the money to replace his tires to go do his plumbing jobs. Joe loses couple of days of work, his monthly income gets reduced, and he can’t pay his rent. Late fees accrue on his rent, and Joe ultimately gets evicted because he can’t catch up. Or, like millions of Americans do, Joe applies for a pay-day loan with high interest rates and fees, which makes the fat cats even fatter but leaves Joe in more debt and rolling interest payments and fees that he cannot dig himself out of. Either way, chances are, Joe will get evicted with his two children. They might move into a motel somewhere and pay expensive daily rates, which will make it even harder for Joe to save enough money to afford an apartment. This is a very common string of events that happens to millions of hard-working Americans every day when the United States of America is one of the richest nations in the world.
Boon was created to see if we, as in all of us, can help people like Joe. If you have some extra money laying around that you could’ve wasted on buying items on online games or on the extra large fries you shouldn’t have eaten, read Joe’s story or other people’s struggles posted on Boon and help them out. It will definitely make you feel good about yourself that you actually made a change in someone’s life and that you are helping build a stronger and healthier bond in your community.
