It would probably be a good idea to update the app and fix all the bugs! Because there’s a lot of them!
This app provides all the information you need about the Canadian Forces.
I read through some of the reviews, and I completely agree with them! The interface needs some heavy reworking, and the CAF needs to hire a UX/UI designer and a swift programmer badly. While the info is all there, the app does NOT make browsing or finding info a friendly experience. Heavily used items like CANFORGENS are hidden in menus. And when you do get to them, instead of opening within the app (like an in-app browser) they open via safari, which is not user friendly. Although updates during COVID have been more frequent, before that this app was an often forgotten task on some poor staffer at ADM(IM) or ADM(PA)‘s monthly task list. To any generals reading this: this app is a KEY method of communications to CAF members. It is FAR more effective than passing information through the chain of command as we have discovered with Gen Vance’s weekly letters. CAF members finally feel like they’re being kept informed. Now PLEASE fix this app so that using it is not just useful, but functional and enjoyable as well from a user interface design perspective! It is not something you can just push aside saying “the info is there, why does design matter?”
It gives access to lots of CAF info, but it abides by the military “orders about orders” philosophy. When you tap on an item of interest, instead of linking directly to that item, it may instead provide you with written instructions on how to access that item elsewhere in the app. It will tell you there are new items, but tapping on the badge does nothing, and you have to hunt through the menus to find the info. Many things, when you find them, are just links, even things like CANFORGENs, so using it results in lots of windows on your browser, and you might think you had information in the app, but unless you have wifi or data, you don’t.
Update daily or don’t bother!
Finally, one place where you can get most of your information. I would definitely recommend this over the unreliable chat boards that are all over the internet and that are based on opinion rather than facts.
This app has major issues with orders made by the CDS being delayed by days and sometimes weeks. Military members cannot rely on this app as a reliable source of information. Some segments of CANFORGENS are missing and differ from official versions. App also crashes when trying to open multiple messages. I do not recommend this application as a reliable source of information. Messages look poorly written using all capitals all the time. Requires bug and stability fixes.
I downloaded this to my iPad hoping to take advantage of things like using DND Learn at home to keep up-to-date. The problem is many of these won’t work with Safari or other Apple stuff. There is much room for improvement as many users don’t use either Windows or Chrome.
Belle initiative mais pas mis à jour souvent (les CANFORGENS par exemple). Vraiment dommage!
