This boxed display just doesn’t work. And the same stories show up under different headers. I subscribe only because I started my journalism career at the S-T but this website turns me off every time I open it.
Great app generally — leaving the 1 star review because I’m hoping this gets the attention of a PM or developer. On the iPhone 14 Pro, pictures in the Sun Times app render pretty weird. When the image is too large for the frame, the render seems pinned to the image’s center. This has a weird effect on images with a portrait orientation. Pictures with the caption “{Person} poses for a photo” render in such a way that all the user can see is from above their knees to just below the shoulders. FWIW images on the website seem to render fine. Happy to provide more specific info if needed.
Timely, well written articles!
The Sun times is not a newspaper. It is a propaganda tool owned left wing activist billionaires. The AP reports the new 2021 owners as “… investor Michael Sacks, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Chicago Community Trust, Joyce Foundation, John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and an anonymous donor.” You will find verbatim democrat press releases in addition to attacks on their right-wing political enemies (a list of Illinois-resident Jan 6 rioters is published weekly). Add to that openly racist and divisive content like this march 2024 article, “Nearly all of state's attorney hopeful Eileen O'Neill Burke's big contributors are white men.” Why are globalist billionaires so obsessed with fomenting racial tension anyway?
The app works well for purposes of browsing. However, the absence of a search function makes it impossible for me to find articles that I want to read if I can’t find them while browsing. It shouldn’t be that difficult to add search functionality.
Hurrah for good local coverage! Chicago Public Media’s purchase of the Chicago Sun Times saved it from extinction, and I’m glad for it. (Contrast that to the current state of the Chicago Tribune, which was bought by vulture hedge fund Alden Global Capital, and now has close to no reporters, very little reporting, and is more of a “Weekly Shopper”-style pamphlet, padded out by Chamber of Commerce press releases.) I’m as surprised as anyone at how good the Sun Times now is. The physical paper has retained its tabloid format, but for quality, accuracy, and depth, the reporting matches that of any remaining independent broadsheets nationwide. When I first moved to the area, this was Rupert Murdoch’s paper, and it was disreputable, partisan, and corrupt … then somehow Conrad Black made it worse! So given its history, I’m surprised to now find myself an avid Sun Times reader. Credit Chicago Public Media for rescuing this paper! And it’s a good thing they rescued it: again, given Alden Global Capital’s purchase and demolition of the Tribune, we were in danger of soon having no great newspapers at all. Hurrah Sun Times! Hurrah Chicago Public Media! I will say one nitpicky thing: the app’s format is a little dated and not very pretty, probably an off-the-shelf solution the owners bought to get the paper into the App Store. It’s a minor quibble, since it’s the reporting I’m after … and the reporting is great. As long as I’m here celebrating local news, as an Evanston resident let me point readers to: The Evanston Roundtable!! The Evanston Roundtable is currently the only credible publication devoted to Evanston coverage (the once-great Evanston Review was bought in the ‘80s and folded into a chain, and has gone the way of the Tribune, growing steadily worse until becoming a “Weekly Shopper”-style tract packed with advertorials), and The Evanston Roundtable are online, covering City Council and local issues, and giving us ordinary residents a voice; give The Evanston Roundtable your support, Evanston needs great journalism too. Thank you Chicago Public Media for keeping state and Cook County journalism alive!!
Doesn’t show sports teams standings.
Update this website.
Would rather read if it looked like newspaper. Always seems a lot missing.
