The app is using background services to obtain the location because the latest position (lat/long) of the user (a courier/driver) needs to be known at all times. When an order is created, it is sent out to users based upon their proximity and drive time to the collection point. Only users within the proximity and drive time (arriving before the required collect by time) are sent the order to bid upon it. For this core functionality to work, the system must know the users current position (lat/long) real time. The users are couriers/drivers who are travelling and so their location (lat/long) is constantly changing.
