Cool app. Love being able to track all my surfs
Some features on Dawn Patrol have so much potential but I find the interaction with Strava clunky at best, if it even manages to sync, and the app often stops for no reason. This has been in very cold water, and could be an Ultra issue, but I doubt it. For the price I'd like seamless integration and a more swept up interface that works 100% of the time.
Tried on multiple occasions and didn’t work. Asked for a refund and got a automatic reply which had nothing to do with what I asked. Love the idea but poor execution
Using dawn patrol helps monitoring which are the most frequent conditions, boards used and which goes the fastest , sick when you’re surfing in front of a cam the app tracks yo to your waves
Been using Dawn Patrol for 3+ years as a replacement for Ripcurl GPS. My review is based on an Applewatch 5 cellular. When long boarding or paddle boarding Dawn Patrol works very well and fairly consistently captures rides. The watch tends to be out of the water more as you’re either standing up or generally the watch is spending more time out of the water. When shortboarding, especially winter UK you tend to be paddling more to stay in position and rides tend to be shorter. The watch/app really struggles to capture data regardless of wave settings. It will capture around 10% of rides. Which is sort of expected as the watch won’t have a consistent of GPS satellites and is probably relying on accelerometers solely. Battery life is short (in comparison to RipCurl GPS). It can be improved by disabling Wi-Fi/cellular which will get you closer to 90-120 minutes of use. I like DawnPatrol and arguably it’s the devices it’s used on that hamper it’s performance.
I’ve used it all over the world, and it’s worked perfectly even on my ‘old’ Apple Watch 3… the new app upgrade is even better. I have it linked with Surfline which adds even more functionality.
Crashes on your watch constantly and the iPhone side of things isn’t any better. Please don’t expect this to improve your surfing
I was surfing for about 1 hour and I caught about 4 waves in this time all being for only a few seconds but didn’t count anything. 0 for every measure
Love knowing wave count and length of ride all on the Apple Watch. Just needs a Strava integration now 👊🏻
Ambitious idea and a really smart looking app. I was wondering how it can accurately count waves and sadly the answer is it cannot. I just tried it out down at my local break - sloppy 3ft winter waves into a shore break. I caught 7 waves in my hour surf, the app thought I caught 31 waves and 15-20 seconds ride each, in reality no single wave I caught was more than a about a 5-8 second ride. I would hope that some of those 31 recorded waves include the actual 7 but I’ve no idea which they may be (and they’re all too long) so sadly all the data is garbage. Shame because it looks nice and would be a good way of tracking surfs but I’ll go back to the proprietary Apple activity app I think.
