Ok, but frustrating functionality.
This app has a lot of promise, but its lack of some basic functionality makes a hassle to use. Probably the biggest omission right now is the ability to find your place in a text: Example 1: User has been reading a book (outside of the app), and decides they want to speed-read it instead, so they import the book into the app. Currently, as there is no search function in the app, the user has to guesstimate where the right position is, start the speedreader, read some text, and then try to recall whether or not they've already read the sentence in the original copy of the book. Then they have to adjust (guessing again) forward or backward to what might be closer to the point they are looking for. In a 300 page non-fiction book, that can require many guesstimates and it slows down the process so much that sometimes its less frustrating to just read the book in its original format. A speedreading app should not take 5 minutes to set up. Worst case is when a book repeats an idea, and due to conceptual recognition, you think you've read that bit already, so you try moving the start point further into the text. After a few pages, it becomes clear that you're in the wrong spot, and have to begin the task of looking for the right start point again. Example 2: The app needs to let the user jump forward or back in small increments. Sometimes the reader may get distracted for a few seconds, and need to re-read the last paragraph, or the last sentence or two; or a complex idea in a sentence may need to be read several times for comprehension to occur. The only way to jump back is to use the time-slider bar. With large books, it is almost impossible to just go back a very small distance. This issue could be fixed with a small icon that lets the reader choose to jump back say, 10, 50 or 100 words. The app just isn't worth the cost for many use cases.
