Gubbins is a friendly puzzle game where players place tiles to construct words, with the help and hindrance of wildcard modifiers called Gubbins.
Minimalist typography alongside kooky cartoons serve as a canvas for moreish wordplay. Dig through the draw pile and make words on the board with hilarious friends wreaking havoc.

So much potential
I absolutely love the set up of this game and the challenges. However, it’s ridiculous to have to pay to play more than once a day. Especially in this economy. I honestly think the developers are just selfish. Just run ads just like every other app so that it remains free for the player.
Good game you can barely play
Love the art style, the gameplay is fun, but you can literally only play one game a day.
I love this
I absolutely love this game! Calming and fun. And no ads!!!
Gubbins
I love this game so much already it’s been like five minutes
Good, waiting for it to be great
Overall this game is enjoyable and would be 5 stars if it didn’t get in its own way. The devs allow you to turn off most of the superfluous animations with one very annoying exception. Certain words trigger a speech bubble that blocks a portion of the board. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve messed up the submitting of a word because it was partially blocked by the little comments the game makes. Additionally, it slows down game play which is frustrating. Devs if you read this add another accessibility option to turn off the speech bubbles.
9/24/24 Update: The speech bubbles are still there and still annoying. How hard is it really to have a toggle in settings that prevents the speech bubbles from appearing?
Small beef
1. We should be able to start one over if we want
2. We should be able to replay the daily if we want
Cute
Cute, haven’t noticed any bugs or anything wrong with it yet.
Great Gubs / Bad Bugs
GUBBINS is delightful despite being one of the buggiest games I’ve ever played. It’s fun in long or short sessions, aesthetically charming, easy-to-learn, and tricky to master. The challenge of mastering GUBBINS comes primarily from it’s unpredictability, *some* of which is intentional (wacky actions! dubious onomatopoeias! lovely compliments on your words!).
The rest comes from an inconsistent dictionary and bugs. Lots and lots of bugs. Letters change unexpectedly, pencils and other Good Gubbins peace out randomly or are triggered by unexpected actions. Bad Gubbins sometimes act unexpectedly or don’t reverse actions when they're meant to. Daily puzzles repeat the next day and must be completed before you can access that day’s actual puzzle through the back catalog. Initially, I thought, “This game needs better onboarding. I have no idea what I’m doing.” Then I realized, “Nope, I’m onboard. Not sure about the game, though…”
My one major complaint is that neither the game nor the website has a bug report or contact option, so reviewing seems the only practical option for providing feedback. The bugs keep multiplying, and there’s not much you can do about it beyond checking social media to see if others are experiencing the same issues.
Still, I can’t *not* recommend GUBBINS. Despite the bugs, it’s a good time that’s well worth the cost of unlimited ad-free plays (less so the add-on offerings). I appreciate the many accessibility options and enjoy the vibe. The postcard maker isn’t my jam, but I see why people love it. GUBBINS is as much an immersive vibe as it is a word game. I keep playing even after my pencils disappear and louse up my plans. Hopefully the devs will squash some of those bugs and make it easiest to report them.
Obsessed
*it’s as if scrabble and solitaire had a baby and that baby has demented imaginary friends*
This game has unlocked parts of my brain I didn’t know were there, never been obsessed with a game this much. The animations and art style are cute of course but the actual mechanics of the game play are genius. Bravo to you the whole team and thanks Hank Green for turning me on to this.
Are these real words?
I used to like this game but lately it will accept words that aren’t even in the dictionary: ECALL, FIKES, PAPEN, SKITCH. Maybe you should let the user choose a dictionary of real words.
