Knowing your current heart rate is useful, but seeing in real time how it varies over a longer period gives you much more information, especially when trying to understand how your body is responding to a training plan. Heart Graph can be used for all types of aerobic exercise including running, cycling, rowing or gym work, and of course you can also use it to study your normal heart rate for general health reasons.
Heart Graph allows you to record new data and see your heart rate graph in real time, as well as importing existing data from Apple Health. Data from previous sessions can then be compared to give a deeper understanding of how your body is changing over time, for example by directly comparing the graphs for equivalent sessions, viewing statistics such as max, mean and resting heart rate across sessions, or seeing the proportion of time spent in different heart rate zones aggregated over weeks or months. (Note some features require a one-off In-App Purchase, as described below.)
FREE features of Heart Graph include:
* Display a real-time graph of heart rate against time on your iPhone or iPad
* Support for both Bluetooth sensors and Apple Watch
* No ads
* Review your sessions offline to spot trends in your data
* Integration with Apple Health: import existing workout data and store new workouts
* Maximise the screen area for graphs on iPhone using landscape orientation
* Group related sessions by adding your own notes, then searching for sessions matching those notes
* Record a standard Reference Set at the start of each session to help determine how your body is really doing; if your heart rate is elevated, you may want to take it easy
* Record data in the background if you want to use other heart rate apps (Bluetooth sensors)
* Calculate calories burned, and set a calorie target for each session
Beyond the basics, a single, one-off In-App Purchase will enable the Premium Features, giving you access to more in-depth analysis tools and the ability to design your training sessions in the app. These Planned Workouts split a session into small pieces, for example sets at the the gym, or intervals on a bike. When you’re exercising, Heart Graph will keep track of where you are in the session and what’s coming up next, alerting you when it’s time to stop or move on. The trigger for moving from one set to the next can be a simple time gap (“wait 30 seconds”), or be based on heart rate to allow a specific amount of recovery before continuing (“wait until heart rate is below 120bpm”). The outcome is a structured plan that adapts to how your body is responding each time you do that session.
Premium Features include:
* View and analyse the time spent in each of five configurable heart rate zones
* Add annotations to the graph during recording to help identify key events
* Heart rate alarms when your heart rate changes zone or goes above or below configurable thresholds
* Import data from the Health app for custom time periods of up to 24 hours
* Directly compare graphs for equivalent sessions
* Compare statistics (such as max, mean and resting heart rate) across sessions
* Record a session to explicitly measure resting heart rate while you relax
* Audio rep counting so you never lose count - make a noise every time you complete a rep and the app keeps track of how many you’ve done
* Import and export heart rate data from other apps or your computer using Garmin TCX format files
* Import Garmin GPX format files
* Export data to CSV files for further analysis in software such as Excel (email, Dropbox, etc)
Heart Graph requires an external sensor to record heart rate, such as:
* A bluetooth (BTLE) sensor such as the Wahoo Tickr / Polar H10 chest straps, or the Mio Alpha watch
* An Apple Watch
* An ANT+ sensor connected using the Wahoo Key

Excellent for my needs
Monitoring my HR as I exercise is particularly important for me secondary to diagnosed heart related concerns. Monitoring with this app. motivates me and guides my pace to stay in the HR zone I am working on that day. The program allows me to compare progress across workouts and time. Excellent product.
Very Useful!!!
This graph is much more readable than the Apple workout graph. Highly recommend!
Excellent app
Updated: I have used this app 24/7 for over 5 years. I am monitoring and managing an illness where I have to pace very restrictively to avoid getting worse. I start a new 24-hour session every morning. I appreciate the ability to customize zones, as my upper limit and therefore intermediate zones are much lower than typical. Heartrate is clear and easy to see as are zone divisions. Alarms are helpful, and each zone has an appropriate number of beeps to indicate the level. The ability to compare workouts (for me, entire days) is very helpful for tracking progress as well as the longterm comparison of all sessions. I tried several apps before settling on this one. It has been by far the best for my needs.
Unimpressive and buggy
This app is very sparse, the UI is cumbersome, and the features are extremely buggy too. The app also freezes up a lot and often drops the connection to my Polar H10. The heart rate graph doesn’t work properly either. I even paid $2.99 for the full version, as the free version basically does nothing at all. I have an iPhone 15 Pro Max for reference. Will be requesting a refund from Apple.
Great app for HR monitoring
I have a chronic medical condition that requires me to not over exert myself. Heart Graph provides me with vital data I need to ensure I don’t exceed my HR threshold during activities. I use the workout feature with a chest strap to record my HR all day long. It’s really helpful to be able to set HR ranges and have the bell sound to let me know each time I’m crossing a threshold. That allows me to change position or cool off before I cause myself harm. I love that I am able to review the amount of time I spend in each HR range as this helps me directly compare how I feel with what my vitals were. Without this app I wouldn’t have been able to stabilize my condition and gain some small improvements. My only wish is that the app was available for android (I bought an iPad mini just to use this app, but it would be more convenient if it could be used on my phone instead). Thanks for this great, reliable app!
A must-have tool for fitness!
My trainer turned me on to Heart Graph and now I can’t work out without it! Accurate tracking of my workout sessions and it’s so helpful to know heart rate zones. Highly recommend!
Absolutely the best heart rate monitor there is!
Update, summer 2024:
I add this update because the best heart rate app just got better.
There is a SmokyCat Heart Rate app feature that is outstanding that I just discovered. In the app I set my 5 hr zones at 80, 110, 120, 130, and 140 bpm. (I am 76 yrs old.)
(I temporarily disable my high alarm which normally is at 125)
This new-to-me app feature allows me to do my cardio exercise without having to look constantly at my iPhone or iWatch.
When I pass upwards into zone 1 a “beep tone” sounds in my bluetooth earbuds. Two tones entering zone 2, three tones at zone 3 etc thru zone 5 with five tones, each transition tone louder that the previous one. And the tones sound on the reverse cool down. In one part of my workout I work hard to get to hear zone 5 tones then coast down in bpm until I hear zone 4 tones and then immediately ramp back to hear zone 5 tones.
Because of Smoky Cat Heart Rate app I am in better shape now than I was in high school 60 years ago. I give my highest review score to this app!
My only two current wishes on my list is that SmokyCat add a feature that raises my high heart rate alarm from 125 to 165 during a workout and sends it back to 125 bpm after the workout. The competitor apps have a terrible feature for this, namely, the other apps will not produce a high bpm alarm unless you were relatively at rest before the high heart rate occurred. So, no alarm during a workout. But, the other apps do this by using an “average” of the bpm over a minute or two before producing an alarm and ignore the quick spike in heart rate. For my medical condition, I need to know immediately, within two heart beats, when my heart rate reaches my set alarm limit. SmokyCat is the only app that does this. But, please change it so it does not happen during a workout please.
My second wish is that SmokyCat provide an option to play music from my library, a different selection at each time I cross my workout bpm 5 zones. This music would replace the tones if you selected the option. That would inspire me to play my music by going up and down my set exercise bpm zones.
If you don’t have SmokyCat Heart Rate app, try it today!!!!!
…….
If you are like me, you want a heart rate monitor that measures your heart rate. Not all these tracking and gizmos and gadgets and colors and blah blah blah. This heart monitor does exactly exactly what it supposed to do it and graphs it, shows it and you can monitor it, and store it. It is wonderful. I have used it for two ye
Analytical Insights
I cycle with a chest strap 3-4 times per week and now have over 9-years of second-by-second data. I’m 66 and my heart has changed a lot over that time. I don’t need to run this app every day for analysis, but it’s always been perfect when I needed it. It allows me to talk with my cardiologist with real data instead of vague feelings and impressions. I feel that I get better care than other patients because we’re not guessing.
Simple to use. Effective
Links well with my cool spo chest band pulse monitor and reliably tracks and keeps in history my workouts. I use a iPhone 2nd gen SE with it Only once in a week or so I reboot my phone to assure linking. Works smoother than my Fitbit app and seems more reliable and accurate. The report is simple and easy to understand and each workout comes with its own graph. IMHO perfect app for pulse tracking for workout and can even track resting rate.update-several years later still relying on this app to capture heart rate essentials still linking well with coolspo sensor and working with latest apple iOS in my iPhone SE 2nd gen.
