All the other apps I have with email subscriptions (Nevada Independent, New York times cooking, Americas test kitchen, among others) seem to have no problem opening the app when links are selected from emails except this one. Instead, it opens a web link that doesn’t know that I have a subscription so it warns me that I have limited access and I need to login. This is very annoying!
Good source for local news but no in-app subscription
I don't have an issue with the app. It is a good source for local news. What is preventing me from subscribing is that there is no in-app subscription. The app store information states that there is an in-app purchase option. The app settings menu has a term of service that indicates the subscription will be through apple. However, when you click any of the subscription options it takes you to the RJ site. One of the best things about purchasing through in-app purchases is the ability to consolidate and easily manage all of your subscriptions in one place. No more having to figure out how to change or cancel a subscription. If you look at the fine print of RJs terms of service (after they forward you to their website to subscribe), you will find that the cancel process involves calling a number. You know how that goes. Hard no for me. Offer in-app and I'll subscribe.
Rarely works
This app stinks. It rarely opens and stays on the app homepage. Worthless
Can’t open archived issues on my iPad
Although the app is usable to read today’s news, it refuses to open archived issues, merely reopening today’s.
App still won’t open
At least 3 to 4 times each week I must remove the entire app and reinstall. Only on occasion will it ask to update. Are they trying to drive readers away? It sure looks like it.
Update
When I open the app it says there is an update when I click on the update message it takes me to the App Store where there is NO update button only an open button. Is there an update???
Poor iPad zoom functionality
I like to read the e-edition on my iPad. I prefer to pinch to zoom in and out of a page, rather than touch a story to open it entirely (you know, the way you would read a paper newspaper…with a magnifying glass). But it’s a delicate little dance to get the zooming to stay and not push the entire edition off the side of the visible screen. Don’t understand why I can’t zoom in and out wherever I please. Also, greatly miss the ability to message a story link through the app. Now have to find it online and copy the URL to paste in a message. Makes me disinclined to share great journalism with others.
Update is horrible
Previously wrote review complaining of 1” bar at top. After trying to read paper a few minutes, found this bar is for ADVERTISEMENTS! I pay a subscription to this newspaper and it has ads. I don’t need to be inundated with more ads from Google. Also, the app itself is unusable. Links to open full article don’t work, page swiping doesn’t always work, text is blurry, just to name a few.
Edit review - app updated and issues resolved. Google ads still appear but now with the option to close the ad.
Lacks good offline support, needs work
The old version let me download the entire edition for offline reading and performance. The new version is constantly updating the screen for readability as you flip from page to page; the old version didn’t do that especially when you downloaded it before reading. Download only has pdf option now, I thought the ‘90’s were over…..
Goes from adequate to awful
The latest update is nothing short of a disaster. It locks up on the tour of changes page and takes a miracle to move on. The navigation is clunky, slow, and lacks logic. Intuitive is not a word that in any way, shape, or form can describe this app. No artificial intelligence whatsoever. In fact, no intelligence of any kind. Having recently canceled our print delivery, I’m seriously rethinking whether or not to abandon the RJ all together.
