The only mod player you’ll ever need

So easy to find all the old classics and love playing/watching them just like in the old Protracker days. 👍

Good, but has issues

Updating review in 2024: the developer is actively supporting and updating the app again, and has made quite a few improvements and fixes, including fixing the crashes that were previously happening. They’re also adding some experimental new features like automatic silence detection which is helpful for some game music formats that don’t contain song length data. This is easily the best vgm player in the app store and worth a few bucks. Overall probably the best mod/vgm player on the app store. It plays custom formats (amiga, arcade, genesis, etc) very accurately and supports a huge number of formats. The ability to download your favorite music from inside the app is fantastic. I also really like that you can easily view information stored in the custom formats, for example HVSC notes. But now for the bad news… Unfortunately, there are two pretty big issues: 1) trying to download from some integrated menus like vgmrips causes an instant app crash 100% of the time, and it’s been this way for months, which means I’m stuck with whatever songs I’ve already downloaded before this bug was introduced. Being unable to download new music on a music app seems like it should be a high priority to fix. 2) navigating through your music library and playlists is really confusing, it’s easy to get lost and hard to find the music you want sometimes. I’m not a user interface designer so I have no suggestions on how to fix it, I just know that it’s not very intuitive. Our choices for custom format game music playback on mobile devices is incredibly limited, and so this is probably your best option. Just know beforehand that there are going to be some rather large annoyances while using it.

Two requests for NSFPlay

I love the addition of NSFPlay but I request two more things be added to the engine, can the volume be reduced? I want to see the oscilloscope views fully without the waves clipping from being too loud. Also, it does not work with endless NSFes because it will fade out on them. Can there be an option to switch it to endless where it doesn’t fade out? (Edit: the new update that was supposed to add infinite playback to NSFplay, but I cannot find the option to do so.) (Edit 2 for 6/4/2024, for infinite loop of NSFe files, I expect it to loop like a normal NSF file but it recognizes the loop point and loops from there, and the looping becomes unsatisfying. Can that be fixed?)

Something's is wonky with the favorites list😅🙏

When playing songs in favorites, it eventually gets 'stuck' and decides to start playing songs from an entire album, songs not in the favorites. It'll be cycling thru all my songs, then say when a song I selected as a favorite from Super Mario Bros for SNES comes on, it'll begin to play the entire Super Mario Bros soundtrack, even though I didn't select the rest of the songs. REALLY APPRECIATE THAT THIS APP IS STILL BEING TAKEN CARE OF! THANK YOU!!😅🙏♾

Great player, recent update bugged key feature

I love this player, its my default means for listening to VGM. However, the recent update bugged FLAC playback. Most of my library consists of FLAC, and the JoshW SegaCD Archive also mostly consists of FLAC. If this could be patched soon, that’d be really great!

Best NSF/SPC/Mod/VGM Player

vincent404 on

I wanted to write a new review on this as so much development has happened over that time. This is by far the best app I’ve tried for playing VGM, SPC, NSF, and mod files. I’ve tried multiple apps, but I’m consistently coming back to this one. With countless options for the emulation fans and a huge file extension support, it’s by far my go to when listening to emulated music on the go.

Needs panning.

Everything is mono audio. But good app nonetheless.

Best app for original game music imo. Huge database. Devs are responsive for support. Only real concern I had was I’d like a crossfade feature. Excited to see how this grows.

So much potential wasted by bugs

Amazing little MOD player app with lots of cool real-time visualizations, a built-in file browser, playlist editor/manager, multiple underlying playback engines (including OpenMPT), and automatic online database search. Sadly, bugs plague this badly-neglected app. On iPad Pro 10", trying to use the pattern scroll visualizer causes the app to crash. On iPhone, you can get the app to crash in various edge cases (example: open the app and hit "play" to play the last song the app previously played, and the app will crash if the underlying file for that song has been deleted/moved and no longer exists). It's a very frustrating app to use with all the crashing. I have to give it at least 4 stars for being the ONLY app of its kind in the App Store and for using the highly-compatible OpenMPT playback engine. But I have to deduct a star for the crashes and lack of updates.

Works beautifully albeit somewhat dated

The best solution if you want to listen to mods and other tracker formats. Honestly, this earns 5 stars from me purely for the fact this supports .hip files, very nice!
