I just purchased this app. It doesn't work. Also, the pitches are off compared to the staff position. I don't know how to get my money back.
I am an adult, beginner guitar student. When asked if I was to learn to note-read sheet music for the melody, I said yes. The books for note reading all seem specific to your instrument, but I really wanted a way to accelerate the memorization of written note to knowing the note in my head and my hand. So, I checked several applications in the store, and picked this instrument-independent one. First, it is iPhone, but works fine in x2 on the iPad, under both iOS4 and iOS5. Second, it has Beginner and Advanced user levels, with beginner sticking to notes near the common staff lines and Advanced extending beyond. Third, you can focus on Treble, Bass or Both. The App is a timed drill, defaulting to 60 seconds but settable to other lengths. It scores you based on number correct and incorrect and keeps track of your best score. Great value for the cost to download. Would love to see and iPad version, too. Update after playing awhile Many of the notes from Level 4 on are not common on the guitar, and base clef is not relevant. App should have some customization so you can set instrument range for notes.
Sounds like it would be a cool app... If it worked. It crashes every single time I try to use it. I haven't even been able to try it out. Waste of $1
I can't even access the app if I go to the timed part or proficiency part it acts like its about to go there then it fades and exits the entire app please fix ASAP
My three school age children have been using this app to improve their ability to read music quickly with the "timed" feature. It has successfully replaced the paper homework from the piano teacher. It is easy to use even for the 5-year-old, who has improved so much (and quickly) now she is the faster than her older siblings! Chris Marks is also very responsive to my questions. I highly recommend this app.
I give this app 5 stars. I am a piano teacher and find this app to be a very useful tool in teaching kids to read music. The timed portion of this app gives me a tool for measuring their progress. Most of my students have iPads or iPods and can download the app to practice before their lessons, and they enjoy the learning process! Every student I have had have improved their music reading skills and thus their piano skills after using this app. I also appreciate the responsiveness of Chris Marks to take feedback to improve the tool.
Perfect for quizzes on bass, treble, or both, with options for including harder notes off the main ledger.
Upgrade suggestion: It would be great if this app included not just the name of the note, but also the string and fret for guitar.
My first note training app. Four octave range with options to 1. Stay on one staff at a time 2. Limit notes to the ones on the staff 3. Expand individual staffs to include ledger lines 4. Have both staves presented (not the grand staff, but both treble clef & bass clef separately within a timed session) 5. Automatic timing of a session 6. Ability to adjust length of session 7. Automatic report of correct number of notes-per-min in a session (even if you set your session time for more than 1 minute. Report is strictly correct answers/min) Percentage correct score not presented in a report. Tally of right and wrong answers is displayed during session but referring to this info cuts into your total allotted session time, however brief, thus reducing your #/min of possible correct answers. 8. Quick flash of the note in contrasting color when your answer is wrong. Would be more helpful if this quick flash were sustained a bit longer for study but the way the system is set up that study time would eat into your session time. Maybe a toggle in settings allowing you to choose between auto-pause for study or not would be a good improvement. Overall a simple, basic app for learning to recognize notes. No glitches found after half a dozen sessions or so. For a buck, seems like a good investment if you're determined to learn to read music.
