Password: Spectre

Privacy-first passwords

Beschreibung

Meet Spectre, your tiny pocket ghost password calculator. Spectre won't save your passwords or send them off to the cloud, instead it'll generate the password you want to see, just when you need it, from thin air.
Are you troubled by poor passwords in the night?
Do you experience feelings of dread in your home office?
Let Spectre float along with you, this friendly ghost will never:
- Save your passwords on your phone - so losing your phone or having it confiscated doesn't compromise you.
- Upload your passwords to the cloud - so your passwords aren't at risk of getting leaked, mishandled or lost.
- Be unavailable - your very own Spectre can rise from the dead, just by reinstalling the app or borrowing a friend's device in incognito mode.
Spectre isn't just adorable, it's also a math genius. It embodies the spirit of a multi-layered cryptographic algorithm, securely deriving every password you need purely from the combination of your name, your personal Spectre secret (don't tell!), and the domain name of the site you're logging into.
As sure as π × ø, your passwords are now always available and immortal. But only ever through you.
“Is this even safe?”
Spectre's algorithm has been used to protect both personal and corporate assets for over 10 years. A cryptographic algorithm combines authenticated hashing and key derivation to ward off known and unknown attack vectors.
“Can anyone find my passwords?”
Your personal Spectre secret is the proof of your identity. Nobody can ever find your passwords: they simply don’t exist without it.
“Can I trust you?”
Trust is everything, it’s also a highly personal decision that only you can make.
Spectre is the product of 10 years of development by Maarten Billemont, a Belgian-Canadian mobile security software engineer.
Every measure has been taken to minimize our access and your need for trust:
- Spectre doesn’t keep your passwords on the device, or anywhere else.
- Spectre never sends your information anywhere.
- Spectre does not keep *any* customer information, at all.
- Spectre is fully open-source, can and has been scrutinized in every detail.
We invite you to tick this checklist against any other password products.
Our sole objective is to revolutionize passwords and digital identity, by finally putting you back in the driver seat.
PASSWORDS DONE DIFFERENTLY
When passwords are just math,
‣ they can *never* be lost,
‣ they are always strong and unique,
‣ they are available to you, from anywhere, even offline or from a borrowed device,
‣ they cannot be confiscated, locked-out or lost,
‣ they will never be leaked from the cloud, or copied from your device.
PRIVACY IS EVERYTHING
Spectre is how you put yourself back in the driver-seat of your own digital identity:
‣ don’t send out any information on yourself,
‣ don’t make someone else the key master of every online account you own,
‣ stop answering invasive security questions with highly personal information,
‣ put an end to reused or related account passwords.
EQUALITY IS FREEDOM FOR ALL
We have a very strong moral centre and leave no one behind:
‣ Spectre will always be available to all, for free.
‣ Spectre is fully open source and licensed Free Software.
‣ Spectre’s algorithm is public domain & available for inspection.
‣ We hold privacy and user consent as primary.
‣ We use technology to guard you from regulatory overreach.

Exactly what we all need

Here’s how you keep your most private passwords private. Unhackably perfect!

THE password manager to use.

High security and ease of use, nothing else comes close. If you can remember your name and a secret word or phrase that’s all you need to create very secure passwords for any site or services.

A little intimidating,

Yeah at first it’s a little intimidating, so I suggest setting up on a website/account that isn’t too important and easy to reset your PW if needed. But once you understand how the system works and how brilliant it is. Honestly there’s no going back. I still have my Lastpass, but for my very important accounts that I absolutely cannot risk anything happening too, I’ll actually use this app. Just don’t go changing the settings after you’ve already set the PW. Lol

Great developer!

Excellent app with easy to use interface. Simple solution to a very complicated issue of storing passwords safely. Been using it for a couple of years now with only one minor issue. Sometimes the app would get “stuck” after the password is entered but if I close it and reopen the issue resolves.

Excruciatingly slow development. Abandonware?

As a long-time paying user of Master Password, I am compelled to say it is a brilliant app in concept. Unfortunately, it successor Spectre suffers from a poor UI and painfully slow development. As a result, I still use Master Password daily, instead of Spectre. A password manager is only useful if it is available across mobile devices and desktops alike. For at least the last two years, the Spectre.app website has claimed 'coming to these other platforms soon'. Upon launch of Spectre as the successor to Master Password, I supported the dev immediately with an annual subscription of $40.99. Projects like this deserve support, and I put my money where my mouth is. Unfortunately, little has changed since. Its predecessor, Master Password was available for MacOS, and was available on iOS until it disappeared from the app store, leaving only Spectre. Sure, the Spectre iPad app will run on MacOS with M1 chips or higher, but it is a frustratingly buggy experience, to say the least. I have submitted detailed Spectre feedback multiple times and received no response whatsoever, even though I have communicated with the dev in the past regarding Master Password. The developer effectively killed off Master Password: its website now redirects to Spectre.app and the app is no longer available via the App Store In essence, he forced loyal customers to accept a replacement app that is both limited to iPad only ánd more complicated to use. All for the low, low annual price of $40.99 if you want to use all features. The developer states on spectre.app (under community) that Spectre is 'a personal project'. Ergo, a pet project that is low on the priority list of daily tasks. Password management is way too important to be left to the whims of a single man. Dev, if you no longer have the desire or time to work on Spectre, that's your prerogative, but then please consider open sourcing the project so others may build on the foundation you created. Master Password/Spectre is too revolutionary a concept to just let wither away and die. In addition, it is disingenious to ask Spectre customers for subscription fees if you yourself no longer consider development a priority, for whatever reason. Look elsewhere for password management that is reliable and under active development.

Good, but a bit misleading

I like the concept and the simplicity. What drives me nuts is that it claims “free for everyone, forever”… then you get in and many of the basic functions are behind a subscription pay wall. I have no problem with donating to open source projects I use, but I do have a problem with misleading people by misrepresenting things. As for the subscription, I struggle to reason for such to be.

Have been using Master Password for years before it was Spectre, happy to support the developer in this new iteration. App works great - best way to manage your passwords! Only complaint is I can’t seem to figure out how to hide the passwords from showing as text in the list.

A marvelous accomplishment!

If you have been wondering how to find a secure password system free of lockboxes and similar tech which act as an open invitation to be cracked or broken, then check out Spectre!

App Closes after I put in password

World Peas on

So I’ve been using this app for a few years now. Was very pleased until recently. I’m using the on device only version. In other words I don’t let it connect to the internet. On my IPad Pro, when I type in the password and hit enter the app just closes. I need access to my passwords. I’m dead in the water! Also when it was working, sometimes I would type in my password and the loading icon would just spin. I would have to close and try again. PLEASE HELP! _____________________________________ Review Update: Great developer! Solved problem. Been using the app from the beginning. They keep updating it and making it better all the time. I highly recommend this app.

Great option
