Sleep Mask is a white noise app that can be used as a sleep-aid or distraction blocker. It produces high quality white, pink, and brown noise sounds as well as some variations of these.
This is the FREE, ad-supported version of the Sleep Mask app.
What is White Noise?
White noise is made up of many different frequencies of sound combined together at equal intensity. Its name is analagous to white light which is a combination of all of the different colors of light in the visible spectrum.
What is Pink Noise?
Pink noise is a variation of white noise that places emphasis on bass, or the lower frequencies of sound. Its called pink noise, because if you were to do the same with the visible light spectrum you would get a pinkish color.
What is Brown Noise?
Brown noise is a variation of white noise that places stronger emphasis on the lower frequencies of sound than Pink noise. In the light analogy this would yield a deep red color. But since the noise coincides with a mathematical model called Brownian motion it is instead called Brown noise after the physicist Robert Brown.

The timer does not work properly. No matter what time limit you put it always will count down from 1 hour. A minor inconvenience, but it is quite annoying.

Essential
Sleep Mask has saved me so many times. As someone who is super sensitive to noise while trying to sleep, I set it to "brown noise (soft)", pop some headphones in, and sleep like a baby. Neighbors testing the bass level of their sound system at 11pm? Sleep mask. Dad snoring so loud I can hear it through the walls at my parents house? Sleep mask. Children ruining my pool relaxation time by singing the chorus of a song 100x in a row? Sleep mask. Thank you for helping me cope with other humans.
Perfect background sound for sleep
No music, note changes, animal or weather sounds. Just steady, smooth white noise. I use the "brown noise soft" setting and turn it up loud enough to block out smaller sounds that would wake me up.
Crap, unless you pay
You have to pay to enable the background audio, otherwise you have to keep your phone screen on all night. I'm deleting it right now.
Pay to run in background
No way am I paying $3 for a mediocre app just so I can turn my screen off to save my battery.
Does what it's supposed to!
You can set a timer or just have it continuously running. I personally like the brown noise to sleep to. Great in hotels! Just try to have it charging if overnight, because it uses quite a bit of battery. Get it if you're a noise freak like I am!
