The Stoney Language Dictionary aims to bring the Stoney language into the modern age. Working closely with the Elders of the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation, the dictionary contains thousands of words and is continually being updated with new words and definitions to help preserve the Stoney language and pass it on to the younger generations.

As a non fluent speaker, whenever I need a word definition, this is my go-to resource, can’t just google stoney words and texting someone what a word means is inconvenient.
I noticed everyone in ANSN has different ways of pronunciating and spelling words.
When other people disagree with a meaning or a word spelling, the info is atleast here, as a base, rather than lost.
I guess language preservation is still in its infancy, but this dictionary/tool is great as a start.
Ishnish to H&L for the efforts.
Ish nish, elders
Ish nish to the elders back home on the Alexis reservation, I can learn my language when i’m off reservation traveling. So grateful for this app 🙏🏽
It’s alright.
70% of the time the words are right, take it with a grain of salt though, if you try and use the app to speak fluently you’ll notice more times than not you’ll have someone correcting you (which is good) and telling you you’re saying it wrong/used the wrong context of saying it pre/past tense, I’ve grown up speaking Stoney for the majority, but I use this app and then use my notes to correct the pronunciation after asking the elders the correct way/if it’s right.
App needs to be updated
Every time I open app it doesn’t load and exits the app needs to be fixed thanks
Mother
Thank you love your laughter & language blessings to your elders & the children are our future ⭕️
Suggestions
This app is pretty great. I would suggest adding a conjugation table on how to properly use these words. i.e. stuff like 1st, 2nd, 3rd person pronouns, dual, and, plural pronouns, like how to use it in a sentence. Both subject and object pronouns
e.g. “I see”, “I see him/her”, “s/he sees me”, “you see him/her”, “he sees him/her”, “he sees himself”
Stuff like that.
Also, bound morphemes should be added followed by an example word on how to use the said morpheme, Nakota being an agglunative language and all. Stuff like past, present, future, aspect, mood would help tremendously I’d imagine. If possible, also add variants of a word, like if any if the morphemes would affect a word.
Cheers
It’s okay
It’s a good app. Lots of words. Easy to understand. Great job at pronunciations and the word descriptions;
however, I find it to be a bit boring. It’s like a dictionary. And that’s what it is. But this app was meant, far as I understand, to allow people, like myself, to learn the Stoney language. But I and I’m assuming others as well would not sit around reading a dictionary. It’s boring and the information usually is unattainable. The word of the day is good and I like it a bunch. But what I’m saying is I would like this app to be more interactive and fun for its users. Why not consider word games? Like word search? Cross word? You say the description of the Stoney word in English and we write it in Stoney on the cross word for example. Or like speed runs of spelling, for example all weather. Write all the words you know that has to do with the weather. And the more you know the more points you get. We can get leader boards. Or even interactive make-believe conversations would be cool. Like you have a convo in the morning with your mom. What would you say in Stoney?
Generally speaking this is a good app and I’m proud of H&L for putting it together. You guys did a good job. And I’ll try to use it but, it doesn’t keep me interested if I’m being completely honest. I’ll skim through the words, look at how to say stuff, but without practice I can’t attain the information. I still only know basic words like tashgude. I don’t know how to converse in Stoney or even understand it. But I’m trying. And this app does help a little but I barely open it. Because like I said, it’s just a dictionary.
