The first day after I subscribed, changing from paper to digital, there was a technical problem which I was told about after several phone calls. I also had to phone to find out how to get the latest day’s paper. Not at all intuitive. Today the puzzles have not appeared. Once you have it, it is very clear and easy to read, but it leaves you wondering if it will work.
App continually asks you to sign in. This week it failed altogether but no note or warning the site was down. Coming close to finding another news source. On the plus side technical support responded quickly to my e mail but would it not have been less frustrating to post an error message
Random log in required : password retention randomly does not work ; puzzles only load if rebooted even if paper already downloaded :
Can’t seem to get access to leave or receive comments. Not as good as The Times app.
The app works ok and is simple to navigate. However, the connection and reliability of access to the app can leave a lot to be desired. It will frequently ask you to (re) sign in / register, sometimes not even recognising your log in details despite being fully paid up. There are sometimes issues with supplements not appearing either.
Puzzles should be the same as in the paper edition daily
Once upon a time the Herald had a separate app for the digital newspaper and another for headlines and individual articles. These worked well. Then they decided to combine the two, and there have been problems ever since with the digital newspaper. In the current iteration: the facility to delete downloads after e.g. 3 days does not work, and the dustbin symbol is so small that you invariably load the edition instead of deleting it: changing from portrait(single page) to landscape (two pages) results in a random jump to a different part of the paper: changing from main edition to a supplement or vice versa often requires a new sign in, when both have already been downloaded. I have not yet used the latest version of the app while travelling, but downloaded editions used to disappear if the iPad had been switched off. I am using a fully updated iPad Pro. As an addition, today I tried to use the app offline for the first time. On trying to load (already downloaded) editions I was asked to sign in again - self evidently impossible offline. This happened with the previous app too. I suggest having a word with the designers of the Times Classic app, which I also use, and which just works.
On the whole the app is very good but for some reason the puzzles page is very slow to update so one can read the news but not do the up to dare crosswords till much later that day
A great app. It’s easy to use and not having to deal with pop-ups on every article is a huge plus!
