No other weekly can rival the wit, wisdom and writing found in the Spectator.
I’ve subscribed and can’t seem to get access reliably.
What can I say? The Spectator reliably amazes and delights. It’s chai at the price.
In about 1979 I had a letter in the Spectator rebuking Auberon Waugh for sneering at American breakfasts. Someone on the staff wrote a friendly reply saying not to worry, Waugh was a „professional sneerer“. In all the years since then I have especially missed the Competition, Taki, Jeffrey Bernard and the pointed conservative view. A pleasure and a relief.
I have cut loose my subscription-tail in all areas: I have no need to pay for access to information sources that spew propaganda, lies, fabricated buzz-word accretions, and other goal-oriented political misinformation that is shameless in marketing Marxist ideology. The Spectator is ONE subscription that I refuse to give up because I require the quality of content and the way it’s presented. There are many reasons that account for the longevity of this publication, and I appreciate all of them. Plus: I won’t live without my favorite writers like Douglas Murray, Katy Balls, Rod Liddle, Peter Hitchens.
The Spectator is like a good friend who helps you makes sense of the world. It’s the perfect blend of politics, humor, and culture. In the chaos of the world it’s comforting to have The Speccie in my life.
This app seems designed to frustrate its readers. Enjoying an article, but then called away? Rest assured you will never find it again; when you re-open the app it will have vanished, and there is no search function. Scrolling Twitter on your iPad and find a link to a Spectator story? Well, it won’t take you here. Better re-enter your password information in the browser. Exasperating.
Never works properly
However, why they felt the need to make the app worse with the recent update I do not comprehend.
Many would accuse the Spectator of political bias, but most of these critics are tied to much more ideologically charged media. The pot calling the kettle black. If you take time to read the articles it quickly becomes apparent that this kettle is boiling over with common sense, clarity, factual analysis and diverse points of view, some of which are thought provoking, and challenging whatever the readers political preferences might be. Well done!
