Bookends

The iOS counterpart of the Mac Bookends application is helpful on the go. However, it lacks a number of important features the Mac app offers. The interface is outdated and cumbersome to use. It would be great if the developer improved the iOS app further given the annual subscription fee, which I am going to keep paying for a better and more functional app. Such features as “Replicate as Book Chapter” (very useful in the Mac app) would be welcome. Many academics work from their iPads and a good-quality iOS Bookends app would be desirable.

Love it! The app is so convenient. I love the option to dictate notes. I don’t love the fact that the option for adding a new note is always at the end of notes. It is not a big deal if you have 4-5 notes attached to a document, but if you have 50+ notes... it is a lot of scrolling (given that every time a new note is created, you land on the first note created for the document). There is hope that in future it will have a desktop application compatible with Windows and MS Office. For now it is very convenient phone app that allows taking notes on the go (for example like while you are waiting in the car for your kid to finish training session...)

Bookends is easy to use, references are quickly found and added to my library, and it works extremely well with Mellel’s real-time live bibliography feature.

Have been changing from Mendeley, zomato and papers 3 for years. All of those just mess up with sync and notes. With Bookends, I am finally able to store my papers normally in Dropbox and read them wherever I what and use whatever I want. The notations just write on the PDFs. Really convenient. This is how I expect a reference management!

Bookends for mac has always been rock solid. The iOS version has been missing cloud sync until now. Although rivals such as Papers have had this feature they aren't as robust. Finally cloud sync is here and works. I've taken off one star because there is no facility to match a PDF to its reference data automatically on iOS. Papers does have this and it works well. Overall though I've moved back to Bookends.

There simply isn’t a better reference management and annotation software package out there. Syncs flawlessly across devices, excellent search and indexing features. Should be everyone’s first purchase when they’re admitted to graduate school.

This latest update has streamlined the functionality. I etnusiastically recommend without reservation.

Been using Bookends for Mac and iOS for a couple years now and it is rock solid. It allows me to have a huge library available everywhere and always in sync. Developers have been highly responsive and helpful.

I stumbled upon this in my pursuit of an app that allows nuanced deep linking to pdf pages across ios and desktop. I was blown away to find that bookends handles this very well. I am now embarking on the onerous task of swapping my general pdf library to bookends.

This is a great app. It’s actively maintained and updated, and the iPad app has all the bells and whistles like support for multi-window (which is a must if you want to read a pdf and add notes or keywords to the meta-data), slide-over, etc. It’s support for Apple Pencil hand-written notes is top-notch, much better than anything else I’ve tried (ReadCube Papers). All in all, a wonderful app.
