I got this app to carry my library from Booxter on my Mac. I bought the desktop version for just that purpose. It was a $30 app - very expensive for an app, but I thought it would be worth it to have my libraries sync and have my complete library with me on-the-go. It does not work, so it was a complete waste of money. There should be refunds available for dissatisfied customers when the vast majority of reviews are so bad.
Update:: still a 1-star review, as the iOS version only shares with the Mac version. There is not a stand-alone app for iOS.
No drag and drop
The drag and drop feature for web browsers (i.e. for Amazon purchases) doesn’t work at all in the latest release. Reduces utility to near zero.
Great for scanning barcodes on books/CDs/DVDs
If you have Booxter on your Mac, you can easily use this app as a mobile scanner for books, CDs or DVDs in your collection.
Thanks for updating it so it works on iOS 11!
Great app, missing 2 big features
I'd been using Booxter on my Mac for several years before the iOS version was released, and was very excited to see it come out. It works great, but adding these two features would make it mind blowingly great!
1) Live editing of the database - When I find that one issue I'd been searching for, I would really like to be able to open this app on my iPhone and click "Owned" when I buy it. The app would then move that issue from one list (my missing issues list created on the desktop app) to the list displaying those I already own. I don't want to wait to get home, edit the DB on the desktop app, and re-sync. Of course, it would also...
2) Auto-magically sync the whole DB via iCloud, Box or Drop Box.
Adding these two features would really raise the already great app into the stratosphere.
Horrible app
Was hoping to use this app with the desktop software to keep a library. Getting books into the database so painful I'm just giving up. Need some instructions or something.
Updated review
UPDATE: I feel I should note that the most recent update to the program fixed the sharing/loading problem completely. It works like a dream now and it is one of the most useful things I have on my phone. Five stars.
The desktop application is by far the best of its kind, which is why the spotty performance of the mobile app is such a disappointment.
The problem is updating, which, in my experience works about 4 times out of 10 attempts. When it fails, the app is useless and won't even display any library. You have to delete the entire app, reload and re-install and start from scratch: and this will be unsuccessful at the same rate, around 6/10 tries. Just keep doing it till it finally works.
This is, in fact, the way I use it. Every update requires several deletions and re-downloads. If you have lots of patience and time, it can work. Just make sure you have an hour or so to spare when you attempt an update. In my experience, it always works eventually.
Mostly functional
Let me echo some of the other reviewers and say that the desktop version of the program is fantastic; I haven't tried any other personal library management programs but I wouldn't be at all surprised if, like a few people have said, Booxter was the best of them.
The mobile app is badly in need of bug fixes, though. I've found that I am only able to sync my library to the desktop version by deleting and reinstalling the app. The app consistently crashed when trying to delete or sync libraries.
Booxter Mobile also seems to have some unfinished elements, which is weird for an app that's been out so long (the last update was in October 2011). I am not exactly sure what the camera function is for; when you scan a barcode, the app vibrates the phone and displays the book's ISBN on the screen but doesn't feed that information anywhere that I can tell.
If you get past those problems, though, it's still a useful app. As I mentioned, the desktop version of Booxter is excellent and a couple of minutes spent deleting the mobile app, reinstalling it, and syncing your library will give you a searchable list of all your books to consult while you're at the bookstore. With any luck the developers will finish putting a little polish on the app.
Glad it is free
After paying $30 for the desktop app, i thought this iPhone app would help with scanning in movies, books etc. but found that it does nothing. It does scan and recognize a barcode, but it does not send the info anywhere, the app itself is blank - even though i have lists made up in the desktop app. The "Sharing" via Bonjour doesn't work (there's nothing there) and when I try to log in with my email address, the app does nothing.
What's the point?
Fix compatibility
I have the full version of this program on my Mac book and it works wonderfully. When I got my iPad I was excited that I would be able to link the two devices together through iCloud or some similar program. However, after purchasing this app, I have yet to be able to sync any of my information. And when I emailed the company they informed me that it would sync, they may need to check again.
Almost perfect...
First of all, the (fully functional) app on the desktop computer (in my case an iMac) works well. If you don't need functionality on a mobile device (ie, just on an iMac, get this desktop program. You won't be disappointed). Its the best desktop program on the market in my opinion. My problem with this program is that I purchased it (price is pretty steep) so that I could have a copy of my book database with me on my iPhone while I am sorting through books in the library. The "sharing" has never worked perfectly although I always managed to make it work after considerable effort. I am sorry to say the sharing has now stopped working completely. This is such a shame because if it worked as advertised I would give tis app 5 stars. It does have a very elegant look and I really want this app to work. Alas, the developer cannot seem to iron out the last few details to make this a really awesome app. Too bad, so close... But not enough for me! Update 12Nov11: The sharing started working again so I am revising my rating to 4 stars. I withheld a star because the sharing is not robust. Works but not flawlessly.
