This is free. Aesthetically it has some nice options, esp. the 3D wooden piece look. I’m not a great player. 5 levels of competence. The lowest, ‘EASY’, should be good for a total beginner. It can win. The question is whether this app has a learning algorithm. It’s quite versatile. It does not always respond the same way to an decent opening of say 12 moves. But I seemed doomed to play on my own. This is a really nice way of playing. Among the best characteristics are the ‘problems’ it offers; eg. ‘Solve in 2 moves’. Hints do cost money. But I’ve slowly advanced without having g to ‘buy’ hints’. So why not 5 stars for a free app. The problem is that it simply plays a lot of irrational moves in up to the ‘medium’ level. A learning feature I like is under, white or black, it will pull the rug from under your feet and play for a stalemate, which is pretty human. I’d give it four-and-a-half if I had the option. The issue is this: how well does it prepare you for competent human opposition? Another positive is that you can really rework your openings quite deep into the game without encountering the same response from the app. In short. Super app. Well worth it for a novice or perhaps more. But not for very good players.
