Decent for a young app
This multimedia presentation software holds a lot of promise, but it’s very obviously ‘young’ software. I have been testing DirectorStudio for use at film festivals and I have just purchased a subscription. My first real use will be this Saturday. I haven’t found the app to lack any major features during my testing, but the UI/UX is very cluttered and doesn’t use space efficiently. Perhaps not a lot of work was put into the interface because it’s meant to be used with an ATEM console, but I think it would be worth working with a UI/UX expert to clean it up. A few quality of life features I would like to see: Template slides: create a template for use with new slides. This should include layout as well as transitions, font selection, background, etc… The ability to select multiple videos and images in the file browser and populate the presentation with them (based on a selected template of course). Right now I have to create a new slide, press add, press video, resize the video, confirm I want to resize it, select file, browse to the video I want, and select it. I have hundreds of videos I need to present and this workflow is not adequate to the task. As I mentioned above, it is very inefficient. The ability to scrub through a video. This will be especially useful for creating thumbnails which currently require you to play through a video until you find a scene and then press ‘update thumbnail’. Again, extremely inefficient and makes the feature nearly useless because of the amount of time it takes to complete. The ability to set the volume of a video. The ability to set the start and stop points of a video. The ability to alter playback speed of a video or, even better, a selected portion of the video. Content alignment features such as the ability to turn on/off snapping to the center of a slide, aligning edges and centers of various content objects, etc… It would be amazing if you opened up the API to allow users to script their own modifications/extensions to the app As I use it more I’m sure I will have more features I would like to see. This is a decent app, one of very few on the iPad, and it gets the job done. It shows a lot of promise and I have purchased a subscription. I just hope the developers are willing to put the work into making this a truly amazing app… which it definitely can be with a bit of refinement.
