GOV.UK ID Check is a secure way to confirm your identity when you sign in to a government service with GOV.UK One Login. It works by matching your face to your photo ID.
Before you start
You can use any of the following types of photo ID if it has not expired:
• UK photocard driving licence
• UK passport
• non-UK passport with a biometric chip
• UK biometric residence permit (BRP)
• UK biometric residence card (BRC)
• UK Frontier Worker permit (FWP)
You will also need:
• a well-lit area where you can take a good quality photograph
• an iPhone 7 or newer - or an iPhone 6s or newer if your photo ID is a driving licence
• iOS 14 or higher
How it works
If your photo ID is a driving licence you will:
• take a photo of your driving licence
• scan your face using your phone
If your photo ID is a passport, BRP, BRC or FWP you will:
• take a photo of your photo ID
• scan the biometric chip in your photo ID using your phone
• scan your face using your phone
What happens next
The app only helps confirm your identity. You will return to the website of the government service you were accessing to view the results of your identity check.
Privacy and security
Your personal information will not be stored in the app, or on the phone when you finish using it. We collect your data securely and delete it when it is no longer needed.

Fails to read biometric chip
I can’t verify my identity because it fails to scan the biometric chip on my passport. When I click “start reading”, the app freezes.
At first nothing and then all fine
The app did not work as expected so I complained via the GOV.UK website. A few hours later, I tried again and all worked perfectly.
Pathetic
As other reviewer said, app doesn’t work so impossible to get what I need. When using app second QR code rejected and refers back to site which needs 2 of 3 items, but one is UK driving license and one is UK credit card. What if you live outside UK? Using phone number for ‘those resident outside UK’ uses voice recognition but does not recognise non-UK postcode and just keeps repeating same question. Utterly useless service! What do we do now?
What a joke
App doesn’t work. It fails at the point where it try’s to connect with the website. This is the only way to register it you are not based in the UK. HMRC digital is a bad joke.
Fast and simple
So quick and so easy. I scanned my ID and my face and it was all done. Great app!
You need help
Maybe tell the customers what the document is. You are referring to as in driving license or passport
I D review
I am already registered on the .gov website for tax and vat but when I want to register to get my rates reviewed I need to go through all this I D junk. You don’t need this to send me the bills though Chris Hodgson
