GroNATIVE is a joint initiative between the Queensland Government (funding), Natura Pacific (content development and photography) and Griffith University (Product Design, Development, and Implementation)
GroNATIVE will promote the use of native plant species in gardens and urban landscapes and show people how species can easily replace garden plants that often become weeds. It will allow users to select distinct gardening styles and looks and how to match this using native planting palettes. This will essentially reduce the costs of managing local ecosystems by stemming the flow of exotic plants into neighbouring vegetation and therefore reduce the need for remediation efforts.
It will also reduce impacts on the ecosystem, maintain environmental health and even allow gardens and urban landscapes to function as significant 'green corridors' that help retain local biodiversity. In the face of changing climate, reversion to native-dominant gardens is a sustainable initiative and will keep places looking beautiful in times of adversity.

I was in really excited to have this app. I participate I. “gardening for wildlife/biodiversity ” as hobby. I live in Rhode Island, USA. My favourite search options (which I haven’t been able to use due to my location) were in the category, “BIODIVERSITY BENEFITS” where I could check off such searches as nectar-eating birds, insect-eating birds, seed-eating birds, fruit-eating birds, bird nesting, bees, butterflies, etc. That would be a daily used tool for me! I also appreciate how I can choose by season. I wish this app so much luck and I hope that it continues to develop. I would be so happy to have it cover the USA sometime in the future. I’d likely donate to help fund this.
Zip codes don’t work
It asks for the postal code/zip code, but only gives you four blank spots. Zips have five numbers.
Useful but one problem
Great app, but I’ve found that I can’t scroll down individual plant groups. Please fix.
App not allowing me to scroll
App not allowing me to scroll down
Frustrating
Can only see first 5 results on any list and can’t scroll down any further
Great app, better if it scrolled pages
Awesome app potential, but limited by scrolling issues on most pages so cannot view/choose plants past first screen.
Good app but needs some bug fixes
I love the aim of the app but when I’m looking through plant lists I can’t scroll down the list. Please fix.
Great, but…
Fantastic resource but would be great if it saved my postcode and there were hyperlinks to the nurseries that sell the plants. Also there is a problem where some pages don’t load properly so I can’t scroll down the page.
Awesome app idea
Wish it covered the whole of Australia. The app idea is fantastic but doesn’t cover my location.
Great Resource
GroNATIVE has been a great resource for helping to plan my garden. A great extension would be to include weed identification to help volunteers working on projects to improve bush land and waterways. I’d also appreciate a way to share My Plants List, perhaps via email.
