Switched from Day One and Not Looking Back
I had been using Day One for a couple of years for journaling but was unhappy with some of its basic features (I don’t like Wiki-style formatting commands and really don’t like autoformatting features you can’t turn off). When they went to a subscription model I started looking for alternatives. Lifecraft fits my needs perfectly. Formatting is done via traditional word processor command key combinations (like command i for italics, not *whatever*) and it doesn’t autoformat your text (you can use tab to indent paragraphs properly without the program assuming you want to reformat the entire paragraph in some strange way). I’ve also become rather fond of the “Moods” you can use to color code each entry. And while not quite as flexible as Bear’s system, the tagging works well and is easy to assign. I don’t often add photos to entries nor do I sync with other devices (my journaling is done on one platform and I don’t migrate it about), so I can’t speak to those parts of the program. I also wasn’t especially bothered by the subscription model in this case. As another reviewer pointed out it’s not especially expensive and it was there more or less from the beginning instead of being bolted on halfway through the program’s life. Free download and $15 a year for the top-end subscription seems reasonable to me, especially when I know about it going in and it’s not dropped on me as part of an update. Visually impressive without being overwhelming, solid interface, and good import capabilities. What’s not to like? Just updating to add I'm still using Lifecraft. There have been some glitches and issues from time to time, but I've actually found the support team to be responsive. I do wish you could set it to backup someplace other than iCloud (I don't use it on other devices), but I've been journaling steadily with it since I installed it 4 years ago, and I've never been that consistent with journaling. I tried Day One once or twice after switching, but keep coming back here.
