I find it very useful in the field. The UX is super simple; I like it a lot. However, some minor changes are highly needed.
- please add a possibility to change the language. The default is Russian (I'm living in Russia), but I prefer the English interface. The Russian translation is awful.
- default map is slow; it seems like there is no cache. The app downloads tiles every time I update the view, even if I used the same extent before
- please add a possibility to save photos taken in the app in iPhone Gallery
This app needs a lot of work still
I used to use QField for work, & it was great. Not nearly as user friendly as Mergin Maps, but it worked great. This app has countless problems that really need addressing. One immediate problem I can think of is that the app will crash if you click the GPS button on the bottom middle of the screen. Every single time. There are lots of frustrations I have while using this app & they cost me a lot of unnecessary time. Please look into all the things that make this app crash. If you would like a list of all the crashes, I could easily compile this for you guys. A few more issues: the app will refresh if you have it closed for more than a couple minutes, forcing me to have to turn off all the map layers that im not going to use. Another annoying one is that misc notes aren’t translucent, & they take up a massive portion of the screen when trying to view the map. Please make them less obstructive.
It says the app doesn’t collect data but you guys should honestly start collecting user data & user crash logs.
Perfect for research and fieldwork
I have been using Mergin for the past three years, first for my Masters research and now for my PhD. This app allows me to visualize and navigate to field sites on my phone (offline!), collect data at each point, and have my projects sync seamlessly with the cloud for later download and use in QGIS.
I have multiple projects in Mergin and have used about 1/10 of my free storage limit, so the free storage is plenty to get me through all of grad school and beyond. Would recommend without hesitation to anyone doing field research.
Excellent app but a little high on cost
This is a very good tool. I am using for personal use but monthly subscription for commercial uses or higher storage limit is more than I can afford.
Uhh okay
App honestly works fine but for some reason and I have absolutely no idea why the app’s language was defaulting to Russian or languages other than English for me. Not exactly an issue for me but just took an extra minute to get into the app for a project. If anyone knows the fix for it, that would be appreciated.
Excellent if you’re a business
I have QGIS at home and this is also a great way of taking a project with you on the road. But the data cap for free version can be constraining, especially if there are several layers in the project. Unfortunately, the current entry level monthly payment is unacceptably high for most of us. Create a $10/month plan with some restrictions (like how many projects you can have), then you would catch more of us GIS amateurs out there. Or maybe I’m not the target market, and that’s okay too.
Great to pair with QGIS for Field Data Collection
The combination of Input (data input app), Mergin (cloud storage) and QGIS (GIS data) is excellent for collecting our data in the field and working with the data in the office.
With Input, I’m able to easily view, create, or update asset information while in the field, with or without cellular connectivity.
This is a powerful combination that lets me get work done!
Love that it’s an iOS app for the QGIS env but lacking in photo support
Like the title says. Technically the app supports photo collection, but whenever using cellular data it crashes the app every time and you lose 3-5 minutes of your life getting it running again.
