Flexible and adaptable

I’ve used a few different lifting apps and lots of workout programs before, but nothing has helped me be as consistent as Sohee’s app. There are several options for what kind of program you want, and you get a new program every month. I often get bored with doing the same thing over and over, but this app gives alternatives to switch moves up while still targeting the same muscles which helps me achieve progressive overload without getting bored. I also love how easy it is to ask questions or get a form check, and Sohee’s team (including Sohee herself!) are very active in the feed. The app is still pretty new, and there are a few things I’d love to see to make it easier to use (a built-in rest timer, quick access to exercise history, etc), but Sohee’s team has said all of these things are on the way. After a few years trying out different options, I’m happy to say I’ve found one I can stick with for a long time, and the coming improvements will just make it all the better. I highly recommend!

I have ADHD, and Sohee’s programming provides exactly the balance between structure and variety I need to stay interested and motivated. I’ve been using her programs for a few years now, but I’d recently hit an executive function wall when I needed to enter the workouts into my tracking app. This app eliminates that issue entirely and lets me dive right into the workouts without any mental barriers. It’s a godsend in helping me get back into a routine again. My only request would be an in-app rest timer, but honestly that’s such a small thing compared to all the other great things the app offers.

I am reviewing the Momentum by Sohee (MBS) app but it’s important to note that this is more than an App. With this app you’re receiving a ton of monthly workout options, an engaged and encouraging community forum, access to expert coaches who care, and a heck of a lot of fun! This review is going to sound like I am being paid to write it but I promise you I am not! I’ve worked with Sohee and her Coaches for many years now and I think they are all amazing, talented, and balanced in their approach. A lot of care has gone into the usability of the app. You define how many days a week you want to work out between 2, 3, or 4 day optons. Then, you customize further based on the length of time you want to dedicate to each workout: Turbo (30 minutes or less) or a longer workout that can take up to 1-hour. You then define if you want a workout designed for more typical gym equipment or one tailored more for a home gym. And, you can switch up your plan throughout the month through a quick change of your settings in the app - so if one day you need to switch to Turbo that is all handled by you within the App. Each workout provides a detailed video walkthrough showing how to do each exercise. Sohee films each of these walkthroughs herself. There is also a short recording highlighting how to perform each exercise without any accompanying audio for a quick visual cue to rely on. Each exercise also has several alternative exercises provided. This is great if a particular piece of equipment is unavailable or even if you want to do a different exercise that is more your preference. Within the app you can log the weight and reps performed for each exercise. You can see what you lifted on the previous week’s workout too for a great workout history. There is also a new mobility warmup provided each month to help get you started before lifting. And, like the lifting exercises, there are videos showing how to perform the mobility work. The Community Forum is great. The members are extremely encouraging and supportive of each other. It is very hard to build a community forum that does not involve using existing social media platforms like Facebook yet somehow the MBS team managed to do it successfully! And the Coaches… oh my goodness. I find it hard to believe that we get access to such top notch coaches for the price of this program. Within the App you can submit a form check and at least one Coach, but often times multiple coaches, willl review the form and provide feed

Hoping to get this fixed soon and it could potentially be user-error, will update once I’ve actually tried the app UPDATE: Sohee’s team helped me get it fixed, I’m now able to use the app and I love it! Especially love the option to toggle through different exercises and the walk through are very thorough

Full disclosure: I am Sohee’s husband, but I have been paying for this app since the first day she launched it out of my own bank account, so I am allowed to write a review. I have used other workout apps in the past, mainly just for logging my own workouts. Workout apps are often either 1) for logging 2) for exercise templates 3) for exercise demonstrations. Sohee is developing her app to include all of these but also a communication portal so all the members can interact with Sohee and her coaches, a bit like a private social media group. As her original members already know, doing this much development at once requires a lot of effort and ironing out bugs to get it up to the standard she wants it to be, as fast as possible, which has been difficult. I can confidently say that her app development is fixing some of the early issues it had during its beta testing phase and coming together for the vision she has for it. ❤️

Affordable alternative to hiring a personal trainer

This app is great for those with a basic understanding of weightlifting (see Casey Johnson’s Liftoff: Couch to Barbell for a good intro to heavy lifting). I’ve been lifting weights off and on for over 25 years. I’ve hired my fair share of personal trainers over the years, which is great for learning new exercises or doing form checks, but it’s not sustainable financially. I’ve also bought books and even individualized training programs from expert personal trainers, but there’s no interactivity or feedback on those programs. Sohee’s Momentum app is a well-designed, sustainable option to progress in strength training that overcomes the issues I’ve had with these previous approaches to weightlifting. First, the app has a clean UI and it’s easy to use. It’s a monthly subscription, but it’s affordable. And the subscription is worth it because I’ve paid triple that for a monthly program from local personal trainers. Second, it’s flexible: You have options to choose how many days you want to train per week. Each exercise has an alternate in case you don’t like an exercise, or it’s contraindicated for you, or the equipment is not available at the gym. Sohee changes the routine every single month, so you are getting new content every month, unlike some subscription services where nothing really changes from month-to-month. Other apps like this are less flexible and keep you in the gym a lot longer. Sohee’s program is doable for me, a busy, working mom. I can get out of the gym in 45 minutes. You also get a PDF of all the exercises if you want to track your workout on paper. There’s also a turbo mode when you don’t have a lot of time to work out or if you’re traveling so there’s really no excuse not to work out. The app saves your progress and your weights/reps so you can engage in progressive overload. Next to each exercise is (a) a quick video demo-ing the app and (b) a bit longer walk-through with Sohee showing you the exercise and giving tips on form and sometimes alternate approaches to the exercise. The walk-throughs are incredible. And the demos are a quick reminder in case I forget something about the exercise. Oh, and the app gets updated regularly! There have been user-suggested improvements added that have made the app more user-friendly, even in the short time I’ve been subscribed. Probably my favorite part though, is that there’s a chat feed, and Sohee personally responds to the comments there. I can’t tell you how many services I have b

Sohee’s programming is consistently the best. She continues to level up her offerings and makes it so easy to want to hit the gym. Even if you work out at home, there’s an option for you. I love that you can change your frequency, or where you plan on lifting (gym or home). Plus getting form checks by the coaches ensures that you’re lifting with good form. Love!!
