I really wanted to like this app. There are some cool wallpapers available in it. Unfortunately the whole thing is covered in ads in many cases it’s hard to preview what the full artwork looks like. You can get some of the wallpapers by watching Ads (others you can only get by buying collections) but if you watch the Ads you won’t get full resolution images. If you want full resolution images you will have to subscribe for $12 a month or $50 a year. $12 a month is absurdly high for the actual value given. It seems clear that the intention is to compel users into committing to the yearly subscription by making it seem like a bargain. This is borderline predatory. MKBHD says revenue is a 50/50 split between the developers and artists. This seems pretty straight forward when it comes to collections, but how exactly that applies to subscriptions is unclear.

Very well made app, with nice animations, UI, and easy collection management tools. The artists and wallpapers featured are fantastic, with a variety of styles and themes. Unfortunately, the current pricing structure feels extremely steep, even though 50% of revenue goes to the artists. In order to use half the wallpapers available, or even download the free ones at the full resolution of my device, I need to spend $50 upfront or $12/month. Considering free alternatives like Vellum offer nearly the same quality, it’s hard to justify spending that much for wallpapers on my phone alone unless I really feel strongly about financially supporting the artists (which would be understandable). Perhaps this price will become more justifiable as the library grows, but for now it feels unreasonable.

MKBHD is grossly out of touch with his audience if he thinks this is a good idea. Overcharging for mediocre wallpapers, suckering users for ad revenue, and selling of your data. Rich YouTuber selling out for more money, taking advantage of his viewer base.

Do not buy. MKBHD has attempted to take advantage of his fans and followers. Take his advice. Beware false actors.

Wallpaper app that requires you to watch an ad to get a 1080p version of a wallpaper on modern devices that have higher resolution. Or you can unlock a premium access that gives you proper resolution for 11 dollars/month when you can simply get great wallpapers for free online. I think I see what MKBHD was trying to do here but it doesn’t work for this. There isn’t a need for paid wallpapers.

Artists should be incentivized to create art. This incentive structure benefits everyone by promoting more artwork creation. Unfortunately, all artwork in a the modern era is a “Save Photo” away from being stolen. This app tries to solve that problem by creating a free and premium tier. Free watches ads and gets a lower quality file and premium pays a fee to get an high quality image. The problem lies in the fact the free files are low enough quality to have very little value at all. The premium version is far too expensive. The final nail in the coffin is the privacy concern. The app asks for far too many permissions to my phone and it makes me feel uncomfortable to have installed. This is the easiest to fix and honestly it’s a little embarrassing for a tech reviewer to not catch this.
