Fiendishly clever but oh so bleak action puzzler
It’s so refreshing to come across a unique game mechanic, and Retsnom really wrings every last drop out of its one. You play a scientist desperate to save his daughter, and end up in a dimensional vortex full of shambling, mindless zombies, with your only tool for salvation being a mirror that allows you to distort space in a limited area around you, allowing you to switch walls and even gravity to traverse through a gauntlet of rooms. The game feeds you new forms of reflections as you go, slowly opening up further possibilities - it’s a real mind stretch, and hugely satisfying to hunt out each level’s hidden secret. The graphics are not beautiful, but the stark simplicity combines with the moody sonics to perfectly complement a surprisingly strong story. If I have a criticism, it might only be that, phew, this can get pretty bleak. Super game, though.
