There are over 70 million people who speak Tamil. A recorded Tamil literature has been documented for over 2000 years. It is one of the longest-surviving classical languages in the world. The banknotes of four countries (India, Sri Lanka, Singapore and Mauritius) have the Tamil text.
泰米爾語屬達羅毗荼語系南部語族，是達羅毗荼語系中最重要的語言，印度憲法承認的語言之一。分佈於泰米爾納德邦，使用人口約3500萬。此外，也使用於斯里蘭卡、東南亞、東非、南非、印度洋和南太平洋中的島嶼。泰米爾語在公元前300～前100年間已經形成了自己的文學語言，並採取了南婆羅米字母。現代泰米爾文即由此發展而來。它是世界上生存時間最長的古典語言之一。四個國家（印度，斯里蘭卡，新加坡和毛里求斯）的鈔票上都印有泰米爾文。泰米爾語是這四個國家的官方語言。
