The Big Crossword

one of the best crossword apps I’ve ever downloaded even the ads are only five seconds long and I’ve even downloaded a couple of games from them, completed both so more please

I have just completed the second release of ‘The Big’ crossword, having completed the first release last year. It took just over 6 hours spaced over several days to complete the 1300+ clues, was a lot of fun and a good test of most of the skills required to complete more normal-sized crosswords, including anagrams, (not too) cryptic clues, and knowledge of a varying range of subjects. Looking forward to the next release.

Great fun, love the fact it’s such a large puzzle so you can go in and out as needed. Was so useful during long and boring hospital wait, highly recommend, wish there were more puzzles to solve!

This app is great ‘bang for the buck’ but also ‘bang for the byte’ at under 13MB for many hours of puzzling. The addition of a second puzzle just makes it even more worthwhile. I think the cryptic clues are harder in the second one, which has as great a variety of clue categories as the first. Well worth having on your phone or iPad, and entertaining enough that I have replayed the first puzzle a couple of times, and expect to do the same with the second — once I can sort out those few remaining cryptic clues!

I absolutely loved this but the adverts drove me mad. Not only are they much too frequent, but it tells you that an advert is imminent, locks it for 5 seconds before the add appears AND also removes the clue! What a pity there is only one puzzle though. I deleted it once I’d finished first time and then have downloaded it a few months later to have another go at it!

I only recently got round to trying the iPhone version of this app and loved it. So many intuitive features, eg: going to and from linked words is easy; not having to re-type crossing letters; clear visuals on iPhone screen; easy to jump in and out of specific Quests; great feedback on progress both with Quests and overall. The 10% of clues being cryptic (the rest being straight clues) combined with their clear explanations make it a great learning tool for people starting out on cryptic solving. I’d strongly recommend it.

This was very enjoyable. Although it’s very large, this tells you if you submit a correct answer- which is essential for such a big crossword but is also very satisfying and makes completing the crossword so much more enjoyable. My only gripe is the disappointment that there is only one so no point in keeping the app after completing!

I thoroughly enjoyed doing this crossword. I liked that there were different categories within the grid. Some clues, you have to think outside the box. The answers depend on how the clue is read. I hope you bring out another one soon

I found the adverts repetitive and annoying. There are to many every three answers prompts another advert so that’s why I’m giving it a low score
