Weave Chat AAC

I am a speech and language therapy assistant (in the uk we say therapist not pathologist) It’s been a breath of fresh air to find this app. Most AAC apps you have to pay to customise the vocabulary and you left with only generic on the free versions which serves a purpose but we really need to add vocabulary the users want to speak about, favourite bands, etc. Many disabled people can’t afford to pay for that. I also love the fact you can resize the cells as my current client struggles to isolate movements and click precisely. Also you can remove cells all together which is ideal to simplify it right down so it’s accessible or bring it all the way back up for more proficient users to have all the vocabulary to string full sentences together. I was pleased to see on Facebook and Instagram this project is still going strong so the app will continue to remain compatible, be updated and improved - keep adding more vocab. I love that you have swear words. I think it’s also good that it will either speak when you press the speech button or one selecting the vocab. It’s not perfect I found getting set up a bit clunky but other elements of the usability but so so good. Very very grateful for this.

I only recently discovered Weave Chat but I can’t imagine life without it now. It’s been so helpful for my communication, I feel so liberated and like I can be out and about in the world. The fact that it’s free is so amazing, too. Knowing people are out here trying to make communication accessible and equitable brings me so much joy, and I hope it continues to remain so. Big fan here 🙋🏼‍♀️. I have it installed on my iPhone, iPad, Android phone, Android tablet, and Amazon Fire tablet. Super impressed with how quickly Weave Chat AAC replies to questions, requests for new symbols and features and how quickly they fix bugs. And that it’s totally free. And that they offer the app on three different platforms (iOS, Android and Amazon Fire). And that the app works on phones and tablets. And that they have some of the best content for adult AAC users. All this in a totally free app. Very impressive. Weave Chat is rocking it 👏🏼

I downloaded this app when it first came out, a couple of years ago now. Then, it was a bit clunky, clearly earning the name “beta”. Since then it has massively improved, become sleeker, and the AAC features more robust. I have come to expect updates regularly as well as near continuous adding of vocabulary. Recently, vocabulary has been aimed at adult users and, as an adult user, I very much appreciate this. Recently they added the ability to add your own category (not just an icon) and this was a much needed feature. I can now organize my added icons in a way that works better for me. Something else I really like it that I can text my friends with icons using the messaging feature. I have never seen this in another AAC app. As a part-time AAC user, this feature allows me to continue to communicate when my regular communication methods are not ideal.

Truly free of charge and easy to use

I downloaded the app to have an alternate way for my residents to communicate with me at the nursing home I work at. I love how there are continuous vocabulary packages coming out and I especially appreciate the medical vocabulary as that is something that is essential for my residents to be able to communicate. I also appreciate the fact that you can add your own vocabulary to make it personalized for each individual user. Also, I love how easy it is to contact the owners/developers to ask for specific vocabulary.
