Alberta Blue Cross® Reviews

Where is everyone?

Alberta Blue Cross is not as good as it used to be. Some of their telephone employees are not very knowledgeable about their plans. After finally getting the correct information from another ABC employee months later, I changed my plan but ABC refused to transfer my Balance Points so I had less than 3 weeks to use millions of points that I didn’t use before because the items they have to bid on are not as good as they used to be. I even filled out the “Manager Request Form 55227” but no manager contacted me. I realize this happened during the Christmas Season but some managers should be there to work...no?

Decent app, a few fixes to make it excellent

First off, this app is easily the best I have used from different insurance providers. Despite this there are several annoyances which if fixed would easily change this to a 5-star review. First, the mechanism to add to apple wallet uses an older third-party application (which is due to be fully retired.) This involves leaving the app to the web browser and then clicking another button. This could be better streamlined with direct incorporation of PassKit. Second, I utilize the biometric login and it’s somewhat frustrating to have to click the Login button each time the app launches. Having the main landing (login) page run a biometric check automatically would make the process much smoother. On the main Nav bar there is a selection for Account, which takes me to a nice page with the two options (Plan Information and Account Security). However, under the Menu nav bar option, there is another Account link that takes me to a different (lacking a nice UI!) page that only has the same two options. In fact, all of the options under the collapsible Menu seem to be a UI-lacking version of pages available through other pathways. Seems a lot redundant. The Notifications (seasonal closures at the moment) on the Home screen, when present, always reopen and don’t remember that I’ve seen them. Appreciate that users are often needing this stuff shouted at them, so I understand not being able to clear it entirely but having it remain collapsed would be appreciated. Also the triangle for open/close notifications behaves backwards - ie the triangle points up alongside the “Show Notifications” text when the banner is collapsed). Lastly, my biggest pet peeve is that the app’s Display Name (as specified in the info.plot file with CBBundleDisplayName) is Member app. This means that when using the on-device search feature or within the App Library, typing “Alberta Blue Cross”, “Blue Cross”, or any variation thereof won’t pull up the app (instead I get my saved contact and web results!) Changing this to “Blue Cross Member App”, “Alberta Blue Cross”, or even the wordy “Alberta Blue Cross Member App” would resolve this issue while staying within the 30 character CBBundleDisplayName limitation. That said, “Blue Cross” would be a great Display Name at only 10 characters and is far more UX-friendly than “member app” which is better reserved as part of the official App Name.

Difficult/time consuming had to call contact center +++

Critic-amazed on

I am a new member and have had to call the help desk 3 times to get set up and submit a claim. The first time, it would not let me register due to sending in the wrong email address. They had to change it by calling in, then I had to call again as my child’s middle name was entered as his first name. I called the help contact number and was told it is an administrative error on my employee’s behalf. So I had to call my HR to get it fixed ( BTW they have no idea why AB bluecross even have my kids’ middle names as the only info I gave them in the form was first and last names). I then had to call them to submit claims as I had to enter 24 dental procedure codes, tooth numbers, date of completion and provider!!! I was hoping it was as simple as sending a picture in an email of the paperwork… that did not happen. Also was told I cannot submit for the child who’s name is entered incorrectly as it will get denied, so I am responsible for finding out who messed up. Yes, me, not them. So frustrated. Do better !! I pay ALOT of $$$ for my family of 5 to have benefits and at this point I am sure I pay more per month than what I am using. Also, just to be clear, I cannot send in the paperwork ( would also be a pain, but less painful than submitting 24 claims in total ) as there is a Canada post strike.

Keeps closing the app

The app says it allows 10 entries before submitting however at the third entry for health spending claim, it keeps kicking me out and then I have to enter everything again. I resorted to just entering one at a time.

App Times Out

Horrible app; when you submit a claim it stalls out and never actually submits the claim. I have had someone straight from bluecross tell me that it’s a problem. Skip the app and just use the web browser on your phone, it’s faster too. Like people with health issues don’t already have enough to worry about.
