Baring in mind the price point of the full version may seem a bit steep but compared to the basic cost of fees for a course at a university/art college (around £9k in the uk as of 2013) and the fact that of all the courses and final year film shows I go to, the sheer quality of teaching and method explained in this book/app this is an essential companion, if not better than some of the techniques tought throughout a three year course. Having worked in the industry for a decade and a half, the 'real' book (The Animation Survival Kit) is a constant reference book but tihs app takes it to another level that the book could not with proper moving examples and wonderful introductory videos from the man himself. In fact I don't think I had ever read it cover to cover as I have with this app. The 'app' is delightfully considered and constructed and a charm to read (despite Mr Williams tendency to (neccesarily) put down lazy working techniques such as - the horror- listening to music while you work!). The side-line elemnts of his experiences over the years in the studio systems is also a delight! As I say, if you are interested and/or passionate about the process of animation this is the most amazing first step and regardless of your chosen technique (2d drawn, 3D stop motion or 3D computer - or even experimental) this will give you a MASSIVE advantage over your peers. Equally if you happen to be a parent, grandparent or godparent to any child around the ages of 10 who is showing signs of interest in this field this is a totally awesome present. All in all not just superb but unique and as rich as a seam of gold.
I am so happy I paid the $34.99 for the full app. There is so much information, it is like taking a master class at Disney. A good addition to this app would be a in depth series of lessons in drawing characters. Hands, faces, eyes, clothing, etc. The app shows basic outlines, but not much in the area of how to draw certain things. I understand that isn’t the scope of the app. Perhaps a separate app might cover those areas. My only complaint is that the free version of the app immediately pops up the “Buy the full app” notice, on every single page you look at. That was annoying, particularly when the free version didn’t mention the full app price, until after it was downloaded. I blame Apple for that. So many apps now, just show “in app purchases”, but don’t disclose the price until the app is downloaded. If I had known that up front, I would have just bought the app in the first place. Regardless, after I bought the full app version, I saw a wealth of information. It will really help me as a new animator.
This app won’t start on my iPad. I have the 8th generation one so it is brand new. Nothing will boot past the opening animation
I would be ready to buy 2 copies of the paid app if it were at all functional! When started I can get the sample version to play the startup sequence with sound, but then it freezes on a black screen. If I press ‘skip’ it skips to the black screen and freezes. September 2020 not fixed yet. Attempted on a 9.7”iPad Pro running iOS 14.0.
the idea of seeing the animations play out sounded really cool and promising but a lot of the animation’s timing/frame rate were jacked up and they end up looking really off, playing way too fast or slow. also audio doesn’t work
This app is awesome! A must have for any animator. Unfortunately I don't have the money for the ~35 dollar version right now, but I did purchase the book some time ago. However, reading animation and actually seeing animation are two very, VERY different experiences. If you have ever considered buying the book I'd suggest you buy the app version instead. I hope I'll be able to get the full version sometime soon, but I'm a starving graduate student at the moment.
In the sample is the sound supposed to work on the iPad?
