Not as good as Exile
Spiderweb’s remakes tend to be worse than the originals. They loose more than they gain. ‘Blades of Exile’ would have been a way better app.

I’m so happy to rediscover this game! Seriously good game!
It's bee said in every review, and it's true! This is the game old school RPG fans should be grabbing. It captures that old sense of wonder lacking from most modern RPGs... Highly recommend!
This is the type of game I was looking for, old school RPG, thank you spiderweb please make more like it, also I would love a dungeon hack type of game, anyway great job
It's fun, deep, engaging and I even love the skill illustrations. A fantastic game.
Well done Spiderweb, keep them coming.
Porting these games to the iPad is genius-they are even better on the tablet and I have played them all on the PC
This is a great game. Works flawlessly on the iPad2 - very responsive (a little too much at times!) and has not yet crashed despite several hours of play. The format is ideal for the iPad because, being turn based you can stop the game at any time. This makes it ideal for playing on the bus into work or elsewhere where you may have to stop at a moment's notice. Unlike many modern games where all the effort seems to go into the graphics with very little for the game play this game avoids that pitfall. While this means that the graphics are not "state of the art" they are attractive enough and do the job well. However it can be hard at times on the large scale map to determine whether a group heading towards you is a friendly company of soldiers or humanoid monsters out to kill you! My only other niggle is that the path finding algorithm can be really annoying at times. On the large scale map if you leave a city/town/fort and click on the map your group can sometimes end up heading straight back into the place you just left. More seriously in combat if you click on an enemy to attack the path finding algorithm can whizz you off into the unknown (presumably to take some loop known only to the game and not yet to the player) which can end up discovering new monsters which attack the lone idiot. This can sometimes require you to restart fights to avoid getting overwhelmed. The developer should really fix the path finder to drop paths with more than say 2 unexplored squares while in combat mode. This would allow you to explore in combat (sometimes needed) without it going crazy. That being said though the game is highly enjoyable and the issues above do not seriously affect gameplay - they just provide the occasional annoyance. I'd thoroughly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys classic RPGs and, once I have finished this game I look forward to trying out Avadon!
I have to admit that I bought and won the Exile series then subsequently the Avernum remakes. I have been thoroughly rewarded by Jeff's games for a long time. This remake of his classic is an exceptional one and definitely a solid fit for the iPad interface. It could use some polish in the controls, but the issues can be learned around. There are frustrations in terms of wacky pathfinding and fiddly targeting in battles due to the isometric view, but it being turn-based makes this easily surmountable. Beyond the minor controls drawbacks Avernum: Escape from the Pit HD is an excellent old-school open world RPG. I had many hours (probably more than 50 hours including re-attempts) of fun playing it. The go-for quests are fun at the beginning and get you enough experience and gear to tackle the main quests. The main quests and their associated dungeons are straight-forward, but with enough twists and battle strategy to leave me eager to get back into it each night. Despite its addictive qualities Avernum: Escape from the Pit HD is playable in short bursts of a half hour at a time and has a solid and pervasive save feature (outside battle) so there is no penalty for setting it down. I got a lot of joy out of playing Avernum: Escape from the Pit HD and I hope you do too.
This is the perfect old-school turn based RPG I've been looking for on the iPad. Top value ... It's like a turn based Morrowind for the iPad.
