Better Ears FAQ
Is Better Ears free?
Yes, Better Ears is completely free and it doesn't have any in-app purchases or subscriptions.
Is Better Ears legit?
🤔 The Better Ears app's quality is mixed. Some users are satisfied, while others report issues. Consider reading individual reviews for more context.
Have tried contacting support to no avail. Just have to hope that one day I can Sync my custom levels that I make and all the statistics that go with. I use Better Ear on three devices, iMac, iPad Pro and an iPhone.
So helpful!
I love this app! Yes of course there are always differences in how naming chords is done all over the world, but for my purposes using it daily has made my chord recognition so much quicker. Would love the feature/option to hear chords again sounded out melodically in testing mode after a wrong choice. But that's not a criticism. Best, most compact ear training system I've found.
Better Ear could be better
I found this app to be limited and a little clumsy in its use of nomenclature. The main areas I use it for are chord and chord progression recognition.
The main issues for me are:
1. All chords are played in root position. This includes when played in a chord progression.
2. The nomenclature used for naming chords is very clumsy and not a standard form by any means (e.g. Better Ears writes Dominant 7th 6 (7/6), but this chord is universally recognised as a Dominant 13th). This is one of many chord writing discrepancies.
3. Similar to the above, the Roman Numeral system used to identify chord progressions (widely used in classical music, and jazz, but also called Nashville Numbering) isn't always theoretically correct (e.g. Better Ears calls one particular progression I-v. This is really V-ii, as there is no such thing as a minor v chord). This can make it unnecessarily confusing to decipher what you're hearing!
Semantics, maybe, but developing aural skills is really about identifying musical theory in a practical, "heard" context. If you're learning the wrong language to identify what you're hearing then you're doing yourself a disservice and will have to correct this at a later stage (sure, you could identify a major triad as a carrot, a minor triad as an apple, etc, but that's not going to mean anything to another musician).
Better ears
This is a great starting app. Good for interval lid recognition, scale and chord recognition and progressions.
The updated app is very good with two reservations - why isn't there "melodic and rhythmic" training (much like in real music) and why is the keyboard so small.
Otherwise I highly recommend it
Ideas for a great app
I have been using Karajan for a while now and I honestly believe my aural abilities have improved because of this. I use the intervals, chords, scales and pitch sections daily. I really wish this app had a section that played melodies and then asked you to identify the notes used in order. That would complete this app for me! Also I wish that your scores would be displayed when holding the screen horizontally as well. Great app and with a few improvements would be the perfect aural trainer!!
Do not download app
After many problems this expensive app has become very frustrating and does not work. It will only play intervals now and rarely. Rebooting constantly is an ugly option on my new iPhone 4. I sent complaint months ago but no response.
Awesome
I hate the use of the word "awesome" because it is so overused - but it is the only word that describes this app. It is the most awesome aural training tool I've come across. Awesome!
No updates anymore?
I was really happy with this app and it helped me a lot over the last years. But now the app is crashing every time audio is played. I got an iPhone 14 so I would expect that it works without problems. It’s really sad when you pay for something and than there is no support anymore…
