Such an amazing app and keeps getting better. There is nothing like it.
A workhorse app, combining harmonic analysis, visualisation, play-along and a built-in Real Book.
I have both the iOS version (on my iPad) and the MacOS version (on my MacBook Pro). I bought MTH Pro to learn more about harmony/chord function. Having watched a series of MTH videos ‘decoding’ the harmony in a popular song, I was unable to download the song from iTunes, as instructed in the videos. I followed the instructions, but it simply did not appear in iTunes. My main complaint is that, apart from an initial enquiry in the YouTube comments (which did not resolve the issue), I have received no further reply at all from mdecks, despite sending several emails. Not good enough, mdecks! In addition, overall, I have found the interface and basic functionality clunky and unwieldy, and frankly, I’m regretting spending $46.99 (AUD) for the iOS version, when mdecks don’t respond to a query regarding the very thing for which I bought MTH. Update, 12 December. More unanswered emails. Do not expect the courtesy of a reply from mdecks. Downgrading my previous rating of two stars to one star, based on total lack of response.
I have a number of music composers, chord progression apps but this is so different in its approach. I love experimenting with this program and have gained a lot of insight into chromatic harmony.
The developers of this unique, innovative app are to be heartily congratulated! Mapping Tonal Harmony is a most intelligently designed and powerful app with a host of potential uses. These various possible applications are well demonstrated by the many excellent Youtube videos made to support the app. My own reason for purchasing Mapping Tonal Harmony was to use it as an aid to learning music composition. I have found it’s really helping me to develop a much clearer, more coherent understanding of harmony that successfully integrates (i) important overarching theoretical concepts with (ii) how various chord progressions actually sound. It’s invaluable to all those would-be composers who don’t happen to be pianists. The fact that the creator of MTH is clearly an experienced and highly capable composer himself means that the app has been designed by someone who really knows what is required. The capacity to explore progressions and then export them to Sibelius via a MIDI connection is invaluable to provide a basis for further compositional work. I believe that a forthcoming upgrade will also provide a ‘within MTH’ facility to produce notation from these chord explorations, something that will be of enormous value.
Amazing app, nothing else like it!
